OHEISTCHOROH NORTH. To-day at noon tho Licensing Committee eat to consider applications for North Christchurch. Present—Mr R. J. 8. Harman (chairman), Messrs. P. Cunningham, C. A. Pritchard, E. Weetonra, and Dr. Erins. Superintendent Broham was present on behalf of the police. Hy. Allen, Golden Age, Colombo street (Mr Loughrey). The Bench said better notel accommodation was needed in tho public interest. Counsel mentioned that the lease expired at the end of the year, and it was contemplated to then construct a new building suitable to the local requirements. Mr Allen had conducted the house for nine years, and not a word had ever been urged against him. Granted, subject to such a house being erected on the site as might be expected from

go central a position. This to be recorded on the minutes of the proceedings. Ohas. Amyes, Junction Hotel, Montreal street (Mr Thomas). It was stated that eight additional rooms would be put up within twelve months. Amyes deposed that he had eleven bedrooms besides those needed for his family. Had an average of eight lodgers per week, besides four regular boarders. Granted j the Bench stating that Amyes would probably find it to his advantage to make the additions as soon as possible. In reply to Mr Thomas, the Bench stated that it would be necessary to keep a lamp burning in every case. J. Barlow, the Britannia, corner of Victoria and Kilmore streets (Mr Thomas). Barlow deposed that he carried on a genuine hotel business. Had had ten lodgers the previous night. Granted. J. Maonamara, Gladstone Hotel, Durham street (Mr Loughrey). McNamara deposed that he had seven or eight permanent lodgers, had four strangers the previous night; had had as many as between fifty and sixty stopping for two or three days at a time. Granted. E. W. Ottaway, Kendal House, Peterborough street (Mr George Harper). Counsel stated that there wore twenty bedrooms, exclusive oE these in use for the family. Had been for many years used as a boarding-house, with boor and wine license attached. There being no provision under the Act for such a license was the only reason for the present application. The premises had been examined by the inspector and found satisfactory. Ottaway deposed that he had twelve boarders, and had had thirty lodgers the night previous. Decision was deferred to an adjourned meeting to be held on a date of which duo notice will be given. J. 8. Wagner, the Clarendon, Oxford terrace. The Bench stated that the conduct of the house was all that could bo desired, but the building, a part of which was thirty-two years old, needed an improved style of ocoommodation. Granted, the licensee to bear the tenor of this remark in mind. The Bench rose at half-past twelve o'clock.
