CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, May 31. O. Whitefoord, Eiq , R.M. I Dbunkennkss. —Eliza Wilson, a recent immigrant from Wellington, and who since March last has qualified by the number of convictions against her as “an habitual drunkard,” was sentenced to seven daye’ imprisonment with hard labor. Ellen Mitchell, for being found drunk at the Exhibition, her second offence in four days, was fined £l, or, in default, forty-eight hours’ imprisonment with hard labor. Thomas D ily was fined 10a. John Parker, charged with being drunk, and who appeared to be suffering from heavy drinking, was remanded to Addington Gaol for eight days for medical treatment. J,ahceny as A Bailee.—Jas. Wilkinson brought up on warrant was charged with having converted to his own use a horse which he had been entrusted with for the purpose of breaking in. The horse was the property of James Armstrong, of Kaiapoi, and was valued at £2O. On the application of Sergeant Mason, a remand was granted for seven days, bail being allowed in two sureties of £SO each, Beewkbs’ Licenses—Messrs. Eckersloy and Maofarlane, brewers of Kaiapoi, and carrying on business at Christchurch as bottlers, were charged with having sold formented liquor, viz., four dozen pint bottles of porter, at the latter named piece, the purchase being made by the police for the purposes of the present action, Sergeant Mason conducted the prosecution. Mr Gresson appeared for defendants ; Mr Button, by permission of the Bench, watched the case on behalf of various other brewers. For the prosecution it was argued that a brewer’s license under the Beer Duty Act did not authorise the selling of beer in bottles, but only in casks ; and, further, that under the Licensing Act, a license is required for each separate premises where beer is sold. The facts of the case being admitted, the defence joined issue on the above points, and after hearing argument, the Magistrate reserved his decision.
