Mr J. D. Lanoo turned the first aod of the extension of the northern lino beyond Waikari this morning. Mies Lance assisted by gaily wheeling the barrow and tipping the turf over an embankment. Mr Lance made a neat speech, referring to the progress of the district and advancement of the colony. Messrs Hill and Thomas, the contractors, afterwards gave a grand luncheon in the Oddfellows’ Hall. A special excursion train with about 600 persons has just come in. A large party have started per coach to the driving of “the first pile of the Waiau bridge, thirty-one miles northwards, which will be started by Mr John Tinline, and a large public dinner given.
