Representatives of the European Powers in Egypt have intimated to Arabi Pasha Minister of War. that they consider him mainly answerable for the present critical state of affairs in that country, and will hold him responsible for the safety of European residents in case of any outbreak against them on the part of the Native population. Orders have been issued instructing the French army at present occupying Tunis to withdraw from that country. The action of the Government in this matter has provoked very adverse criticism in Paris, and public meetings have been held protesting against the evacuation being carried out. The petition for a new trial by Charles Jules Guiteau, sentenced to death for the murder of the late General Garfield, President, was refused. In the House of Commons on Thursday the Bight Hon. W. Haroourt introduced a Bill for the Repression of Crime in Ireland. The measure provides that where ordinary laws are powerless a commission of three judges shall try charges of treason, felony, murder, attacks upon houses, &0., without a jury. Property in inculpated districts is to be levied upon for the costs of suoh trials. The Act is to operate for a period of three years. The severity of its provisions is unequalled. Tories approve of it. The leaguers, both moderate and extreme, are astounded, and denounce its provisions. The Alien Acts are to be revised and amended so as to facilitate the expulsion of dangerous foreigners. Newspapers inciting to acts of violence are to be summarily su; pressed, and compensation is to be exacted in oases of murder, mutilation of and damage to pro--17. • In the House of Commons last evening, Mr Gladstone introduced a Bill dealing with arrears of rent due by the Irish tenantry. The measure provides tuat landlords shall forego the balances of arrears. Suoh assistance is limited to farmers of £2O rental—Griffiths’ valuation —on tenants proving their poverty, and the duration of it is to bo three years. May 18, The Dublin police have succeeded in tracking the vehicle which contained the assassins of Lord Frederick Cavendish and Mr Burke. It proves to be an unliotnied oar. The insurance money on the ship Loch Maree, which had left Geelong wheat laden several months ago and not since been hoard of, has been paid. An exodus of Europeans is taking place at Cairo ow.ng to the Egyptian troubles.
