HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
The annual general meeting of the above society was held last Tuesday evening, in the room of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, Hereford street. There were about fifty members present. The Hon. B, O. J. Stevens, M.Li.O., president of the association, occupied the chair. The Chairman then read the annual report, which stated that the number of exhibitors during the past season showed an increase — being 71 as against 38 in 1879 ; that four exhibitions had been held during the period under review, the rose show exhibits being so largely in excess of former years as to necessitate its being held at the Oddfellows’ Hall, and that the autumn and chrysanthemum shows were eminently successful; that the prize distribution of plants at the autumn show was hoped to conduce to better results in succeeding years ; that the prize money paid during the year was £3O more than paid any previous year, but the scanty public patronage at some of the shows, and the diminished success of the plant prize exhibition had prevented any addition to the reserve funds ; that a large number of special' prizes had been given; that the indefatigable secretary, Mr F. Jones, had stated his intention of retiring from the duties of that office, which was to be regretted, and that the committee recommended Mr P. W. Isitt be his successor. Messrs Nairn, junr., and J, Bowlker were also candidates ; that with a view to prevent the introduction of the phylloxera or vine louse, prevalent in Australia, it would be well it the incoming committee should memorialise the Government to prohibit the importation of vine plants or cuttings from infested countries ; that the society’s thanks are due to the A. and P. Association for the use of its room for meetings, to the judges and stewards, and also the auditors. The balance-sheet showed—Receipts from subscriptions to be £ll7 Os 6d; show receipts, £129 6j 91 ; prize distribution of plants, £4l 6s; special prizes, £l4 Oj 6d.
