BOARD OF HEALTH.
An ordinary meeting took place yesterday. Present—Mr W. Vincent (chairman), Messrs. L. Harper, 8. Manning, A. Ashworth, W. H. Hubbard, and Dr. Doyle. The town clerk, Sydenham, wrote by direction of the looal sanitary committee, forwarding copy of extract from the report of the inspector of nuisances, stating that he bad found the storm channel fronting Mr Praser'e premises, Scott's road, in an unhealthy state, full of rotten soap suds, &c., and observed that a large panful of more objectionable matter was just about being emptied in. The nuisance had been materially abated before the inspector’s visit concluded. The inspector of nuisances reported re Mr Fraser’s premises that he had promised to refrain in future from putting house slops in. the street side channel. The yard needed paving, and drainage was required. Should he be compelled to pave the cowyard he would remove the cowshed or give up the businessThe inspector had suggested, as a temporary measure, that he should run slops, Ac., into a hole in bis garden rather than himself interfere with the channel.
Dr. Symes wrote that he had not been aware that low fever was an infections disease, and was synonymous with typhoid fever. He had always understood the term “low fever” to refer to the local fever common in flat ill-drained districts like Christchurch, caused by malarious exhalation, from the soil. The writer further referred to the nomenclature and classification issued by the British Government. Letter deemed a satisfactory explanation. Dr. Frins wrote that he had not reported the case of Mr A. F. Morioe, the case not assuming a contagious or infectious form, and in the doctor’s opinion not coming under the provisions of the Act. Explanation deemed satisfactory. Dr. Doyle moved — 11 That in the opinion of the Board it is desirable that the powers delegated by this Board under the Public Health Act to the Christchurch City Council, be revoked.” Seconded by Mr Hubbard, and carried. ■ -
Dr. Doyle moved—“ That in future the meetings of the Board of Health be held on alternate Friday afternoons, at three o’clock.” Seconded by Mr Hubbard, and carried, Mr Alfred O. Burt wrote complaining of onuisanoe on his property in High street, Knightstown, the Board having out an open drain through his section several inches below the level of the street and channel, thereby causing stagnant water to accumulate. A cesspool was outside through the channel being improperly constructed. Several oases of diphtheria had occurred in the vicinity. Accounts amounting to £46 17* Sd were passed for payment.
