J NEW PLYMOUTH, May 19, As the steamer llauraki, from Kaipara to Waitara, was nearing the latter place, about two o’clock this morning, a seaman, named Michael Walsh, was knocked over by a sail. A boat was lowered, but got swamped ; life baoys were then thrown overboard to him, but'without avail, and he soon sank. WELLINGTON, May 19.
Parliament was opened at two o’clock today, by the Governor in person, with the usual ceremonies. There was a very large attendance of the public. Mr Rutherford, member for Bruce, will second the address in reply this afternoon, The Government have decided to appoint a Commission to enquire into the management of the Dunedin Benevolent Institution. The Commission will not consist of more than two members, and probably only one, Mr Whitefcord, B.M. at Kaiapoi, is to be one of the commissioners, and it ie expected Dr. Giles, K.M. at Hokitika, will bo asked to not with him. The commission will be issued forthwith.
NELSON, May 19. News has been received here that Richard Shields, one of the oldest diggers on the West Coast, and a first discoverer, has been drowned while crossing the Matokitikiti at Hampden. He was crossing with James Clinton, a settler, both being on one horse, when the animal bucked in midstream, and both men were thrown off. Clinton managed to get ashore, but Shields was carried down into the Buffer Biver and was drowned. His body was recovered on Saturday night, a few hoars after the accident,
