The latest nows from Mount Brown states that one inch of rain has fallen, but none has been collected for mining purposes. Fourteen persons have been fined £3O for sly grog selling. Archibald Forbes’ first lecture yesternight attracted a large audience, including the Governor and suite.
J. H. Goodlet was yesterday elected auditor of the Australian Mutual Provident Society. The diamond drill penetrated 722 ft at the Rand wick Asylum, and tapped a good supply of fresh water.
An attempt was made to upset a tramoar near Oampbolltown at six o’clock on the morning of the Blh, when some persons unknown placed logs of ironbark across the rails in two places. The first obstruction was passed over safely, and the second was observed in time, so no damage resulted. The police are inquiring into the matter. A telegraph messenger was accidentally killed at Flood's wool stores yesterday, when a bale of wool fell upon him.
The Melbourne Australian committee of the Irish Land League held an indignation meeting on the Bth to express their detestation of the recent murders in Dublin, and repudiating political assassination. The Ministry also sent a telegram of condolence to Mr Gladstone, Sir William Stawell announces his resolution to resign the Chancellorship of the University. Two young men, Langley and Royder, have been committed for trial for obtaining money under pretence of being medical practitioners.
BRISBANE, May 9. An important discovery of tin is reported in the neighborhood of the Normanby river. A timely discovery was made of a log placed on the railway at Sandgate, intended to wreck the workmen’s train.
