CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, Mat 16. [Before R, Beetham, Beq , B.M.] Drunkenness. —Wm. Povinghouse, for being drunk while in charge of a horse and cart, and with having made'use of obscene language when arrested, was fined £l, or in default forty-eight hours’ imprisonment, G. W. Pickering and Benj, Fielder, for being drunk while in charge or horses and carts, wore each fined 10s, or in default forty-eight hours’ imprisonment with hard labor. For first offences four men were each fined ss, or in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment with hard labor, A woman was discharged with a caution. Larcenies. William Anderson was charged with stealing from a stall in the Exhibition a hair-brush, valued at ss, the property of J. Clark. Sergeant Mason stated that prisoner had been caught in the act, and arrested, but got away from the constable, and had been re- arrested on Monday. Prisoner asked for a remand for twenty-four hours to allow him time to consult a solicitor. Bemand granted. John Reynolds pleaded not guilty to stealing a potatoe fork, the property of James Chamberlain, at Papanui. He made a long statement as to his having bought it in the street from some person whom he did not know. As there was no direct evidence of the theft, he was discharged with a caution.
Bbeaoh op Prison's Act. —William Minors was charged with having been found by night on the promises of Addington gaol. He had been found by the gaoler ringing the bell at the doer. When questioned, he said I • had got away from the police, who had arrested, and were pursuing, him. He now pleaded guilty, saying that he had been arrested on warrant at Mr West’s farm, Spreydon. He did not know what ho hud been arrested for, but took advantage of an opportunity and escaped. Subsequently he thought it best to go the gaol and give himself up. In answer to the Magistrate, the police said they know nothing of the prisoner or of the arrest ho spoke of. The Magistrate said prisoner must be either drunk or mad, and remanded him for eight days, to give time for enquiries to be made.
