AUCKLAND, May 13
The residence of Mr R. J. Middletone, Papakura Valley, has been burned down. It was insured with its contents in the New Zealand Insurance Company for £7OO. The annual concert and ball by the Auckland Railway Band in the Choral Hall was highly successful. Mounted Constable Kelly left on Monday for the northern settlements. No tidings have been received of him. As ho was mounted on a fresh horse, some accident is feared. TIMARU, May 13.
R. Wilkin and Co. to-day took over the buildings and auctioneering business of Moss Jonas, an old established auctioneer. The price paid is something over £IO,OOO. DUNEDIN, May 14'
The deferred payment settlors who have purchased their land by auction at high prices, and have much difficulty in paying up Iheir instalments, arc agitating to have their grievances placed before Parliament this session. A public meeting is to be held in Dunedin on the 27th inst, in connection with the matter. The local Refrigerating Company expect to begin operations at their Bnrnside works in about six weeks.
