Besides these she has torpe Ines, machine guns and liflas, and altogether would be a formidable antagonist to any cruiser of the ordinary kind. Her engi es are 1140 hp, of the direct acting convertible typs; that is, although they work ordinarily on the compound principle, by a very simple adjustment they could be immediately changed to the jet or surface condensing action. The vessel has also a feathering screw, which obviates the neeo.-sity of lifting the propeller when under sail. By having but two blades they are t irned fore and aft on a run with the do id wood, so as to offer the least obstruction to the ship’s progress.
