Superintendent Thomson proceeds to Australia on Tuesday for the purpose of bringing back Harges. It appears the defaulter’s Adelaide creditors are endeavoring to have him declared a bankrupt, so that they may impound what was found in his possession when arrested.
NEW PLYMOUTH, May 10.
In the Supreme Court this morning the case of Gallogher, for killing a Native at Manutahi, was resumed, but no fresh evidence is as yot adduced, NAPIER, May 10.
The local agent of the “ Mercautine Bankruptcy Gazette,’’ for publishing under the heading of “ Bankruptcy ” a deed of arrangement by a debtor, has been threatened with proceedings for £SOO damagas, on the ground that an arrangement by deed does not come within the bankruptcy clause. The usual bankruptcy notice had been published by the Clerk of the District Court in the local paper*. The schooner Golden Isle, from Greymouth for "Manukau, has put in here for provisions. She left Greymouth on the 22nd ult, WELLINGTON, May 10. A burglary was committed at Bright’s Princess’ Hotel early this morning, an entrance being effected through a window. Three £1 notes were taken from the cask box. Nothing else was disturbed, and there is no clue to the burglar. An inquiry will be held to morrow into the recent fire at Chew’s buildings. The governor of the College has decided, to wait on the Government asking for funds to erect a new wing to the College, and establishing a girls’ high school on a similar principle to those in other eitus. DUNEDIN, May 10. A cottage in Hanov.r street, occupied by John Marshall, carpenter, was discovered to be on fire last night. The family were all absent. Circumstances pa nt to a clear case of incendiarism. The property was insured for £2OO. LYBLL, May 10. Owing to the flood and the consequent isolation by communication with the seaboard, Lyell has been cut off for the past twenty days, and is reduced to a condition bordering on famine. A public meeting last night carried a resolution strongly condemning the administration in consequence of the delay in the construction of a bridge at Mangahua Junction, where teams are continuously stuck up. BE ALKY, May 10. Heavy rains ana snow have caused the Waimakariri river to break into the sideling known as the Goldeny Saddle about two and and a half miles on the western side of the Cass, so that Cobb’s and Kugg’s coaches could not proceed farther than the Cass last night, but they arrived at the Baaloy shortly after eight this morning, and before nine o’clock started again, being four or five hours after the usual time. It is still rsining.
