THE GREAT NATIVE MEETING.

[press association telegram ] ALEXANDRA, May 8

With reference to bis recent visit to Mokau, Wahanni says he has established a good understanding with To Wetere, who is expected here to-duy. Te Wetere asserts that the Ngatitamata tiibe, and not himself, were the Natives who pressed on the sitting of the Lind Court. Wahanui declared that their claims would easily bo demolished by documentary and other evidence, proving that they had been driven to the South Island, and were only permitted by Tawhaio to return on sufferance. This permission was first offered by Potatau, but not availed of until after hi* death. Tawhaio renewed it, though a large claimant to the land. It is doubtful whether Wahanni will attend the Court. In reply to a question whether he would do so, he said there was no necessity, as Wetere would act for him and demolish any claims of Ngatitamata. Unless Wahanui at'.ends, however, the work of the judge will be one of great delicacy, and may produce trouble. Both Wahanui and Bewi strongly condemn the rescue of the Native prisoners from the police on Paturday night. They had done wrong, and ought to be punished. Information will probably bo laid against two half-castes who assisted in the rescue. The distribution of food will probably occupy all day. Several of the Natives from inland have swelled, and number at present to probably 1600, Tawhaio came into Alexandra this morning for breakfast at the hotel.
