WELLINGTON, May 5. A meeting of the Nuw Zealand Biflo Aesoelation was held this evening at the Chamber of Commerce. His Worship the Mayor in the chair. The question of holding the next competition meeting was fully discussed. A large and influential committee was formed for the purpose of eliciting information as to the suitability of Wellington, to be submitted to the Council of the Association. A shocking accident occurred in the quarry this afternoon. While Patrick Foggerty and Biohard Owen were clearing away the result of a shot, a flake of stone weighing about 5 cwt. fell, striking Owen on the side of the head, aud severing his left arm between the elbow and the wrist. Foggerty was wounded in the skull, and otherwise much bruised. There ore no hopes of Owen’s recovery. Foggerty’ssymptoms are morefavorable. Both were steady men, -with wives and families. They were taken to the hospital. TIMABU, May 5. Preliminary inquiry into the wreck of the Duke of Sutherland was concluded to day. The evidence is to be forwarded to the Marine Board. About thirty gentlemen, including the representatives of various insurance companies, went by special train to Moegiel today. The object of the visit was to inspect the new carding and spinning room just erected, and to fix the rate for the new insurance policy, A number of speeches wore made, &c., and it was stated that, although the machinery was working night and day, it was unable to keep pace with the demand for the productions. The Government schooner Kekeno has re. cently visited the west coast of btowart’s Island, but could not see any wreckage or signs of the missing ship Min-y-don. The Kekeno will shortly visit the Auckland Islands. Great complaints are made of the scaroity of trucks on the Southland section of railways. , _ At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to-day, a committee was appointed to draw up reasons, for submission to both Houses of Parliament, why the Bluff harbor should be the first and lust port of call for any line of steamers between Great Britain and New Zealand, subsidised by the Colonial Government. It was pointed out that, in addition to cargo both going and coming, Southland had now a coalfield connected with the Bluff harbor by rail, and that consequently steamers could very easily coal there. One of the members pointed out that, in view of the obstacles Nature had provided to steamers entering Port Chalmers or Dunedin, it was quite possible Lyttelton and the Bluff would be the only Middle Island ports to be visited.
