HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

An ordinary meeting was held on Wednesday last. Present—The | Mayor of Christchurch (in tho chair), the Hon. E. O. J. Stevens, Mr J. G. Hawkes, Drs. Prins and Turnbull, and tho Mayors of Lyttelton and Sydenham. The chairman was congratulated on haying recovered sufficiently to allow of his reappearing at the Board meetings. The application of C. Hancock, male nurse, for increase of salary to £3, instead of £2 per month, was granted. Tho consideration of Government’s offer to pay half the coat, provided tho total did not exceed £IOOO of the proposed additional buildings (kitchen, servants’ hall, &o.), was deferred till after next session of Parliament.

Mr Chaa. Ffrenoh Pemberton, Sefton, wrote in regard to £25 sent him from Home by relatives of the late Ed. J. Evans, that sum having been sent to Mr Pemberton, “ to do the best he could ” for Evans. On receipt of tho money, Mr Pemborlon at onoa went to the hospital, and learned that Evans was dead. Mr Pemberton then immediately gave orders for a suitable atone to be placed over the grave, and found that, through some alleged blunder, on whoso part he did not know, ho had to pay for two graves instead of one. He would be happy to forward information as to claim for maintenance to Evans’s relations, and had no doubt the amount would be remitted. Resolved— “To forward to the relatives tho account, same to be endorsed by Mr Pemberton.”

A letter from Government intimated that they had no power to interfere with the charitable aid arrangements of Ashburton county and borough. The secretary was instructed to send the Ashburton hospital and charitable aid committee information as to what patients from Ashburton district were in the institutions under the Board ; and, on Mr Hawkes’ motion, seconded by the Mayor of Hvdenfcam, it was resolved —“That a letter be written to the Ashburton committee, asking if they will agree to pay for the maintenance of any patient admitted from Ashburton county.” Aprppos of this business, Dr. Brins referred to a recent case of a sick and destitute girl who had come from Ashburton, and had ;jnst gone back there to fetch her things, intending to return to the Christchurch Hospital ; and Mr Stevens mentioned that it would be desirable if an understanding could be arrived at with all local bodies likely to send patients to Christchurch. Only one patient was stated to bo in Akaroa Hospital. The master of Lyttelton Orphanage reported that four children wore admitted, and one bad been withdrawn, in April, There wore now fifty boys and forty-four girls in the institution. The report of the orphanage committee, of which a copy is to be forwarded to Government, dated that the committee had carefully considered the reports by the InspectorGeneral of Schools, and by the late Inspector, Mr Rested. The committee were unable to report favorably on the discipline of the school, and regretted to find that both the boys and leaving the institution showed little aptitude for any kind of work required of them. The committee were not at present prepared to recommend that all children who have passed the first standard should bo sent to the borough school, os there were certain obstacles to be overcome before the proposal could be satiafaotorily carried out. The committee thought the school should bo re-organised, that the boys and girls should be taught together under duly qualified teachers, and that the institution generally should be placed on a much bettor basis than at present, both as to instruction and discipline. The committee, therefore, recommended that the institution be reorganised, and that notice be given to the present staff that their present engagement will terminate in three months from date. Report adopted.
