UNITED FRIENDLY SOCIETIES

In the Foresters’ Hall last Wednesday a meeting of delegates from various Christchurch societies was held, with a view to taking steps to further the organisation of a dispensary in Canterbury on the 00-operative system, draft rules for which were laid on the table. Tho chair was occupied by Mr S. Bath. Sixteen gentlemen wore present. Proposals were submitted as to how funds might be most readily raised to promote tiiat object. Mr S. D. Nathan reported the result of an interview with Messrs Joubort and Twopeny in regard to permission for the various societies to hold a concert, ball, and torchlight prccess'on in the Exhibition, a third ef the proceeds to go in aid of the funds of the societies. On Mr B. Watts’ suggestion, the terms were compled with, tho meeting taking occasion to express their determination to make every effort to have the ball select. Mr W. E. Samuels’ motion was carried, to invite tho cooperation of tho Oddfellows, that body not being represented at the meeting. It was staled that Mr Joubert had intimated that no departure would bo sanctioned from the usual charge of one shilling for admission at tho doors until after ten o’clock ; and the opinion of tho meeting was in favor of tickets for reserved seats being obtainable from the lodges. The date of the enlc.-tainmont having been fixed for the middle of June, printing, concert aud procession committees were chosen, and the prices wore set down at 3s for a single and 5 3 for a double ticket, A hint was thrown out that it was not unlikely the services of the Austrian Band might be secured for playing danoa music. A motion by Mr Nathan was carried—“ That Messrs O’Sullivan, Willateed and the mover wait as a deputation on the promoters of the Exhibition to tender acceptance of their offer." A cordial vote of thanks to tho chairman concluded the proceedings.
