CHRISTCHURCH. Thubsday, May 4. [Before R. Beetham, Esq., R.M.] Shoplifting.—Thomas Brown pleaded guilty to stealing a pair of hoots from the shop of Mr Robinson, Colombo street, on Wednesday last. He was sentenced te one month’s imprisonment with hard labor. Stealing a Swag. —Harry Arnold was charged with stealing a swag valued at £llos, the property of Wm. Lockhart. It appeared that the swag had been left on Monday at the Sawyers’ Arms. It was missed on Wednesday morning, aud was afterwards found concealed among some shrubs near the hotel. The police were informed, and tho spot was watched. Prisoner went there about ton o’clock last night, and took it out. He 'was then arrested. Prisoner pleaded that being drunk he mistook tho swag for ona of his owa which it resembled. He was sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment with hard labor. Assault.—Arthur Picroy was charged with assaulting on or about March 3rd last Ekzabsth Rudman. Superintendent Broham applied for a remand. He stated that tho parties had been living together, and about tho date named prisoner struck the woman, breaking her hand. She had since been in the hospital, and is now at the point of death, her deposition having been taken in view of that event. A remand was granted till May 11th.

LYTTELTON. Thursday, May 4, (“Before H. Allwright and J. VY. Smith, Esq*., J.P.’s.] Neglecting to Provide. — A Mrs Robinson a widow, was summoned by the nolice to pay for the support of a child in the Burnham Industrial School. After heariug the evidence of Sergeant Morioe, and Mrs Robinson’s statement, the Bench declined to make any order. Mrs Bobiuson expressed her willingness to pay for the support of tho child as soon as cho was in a position to do so. Civil Case. — Morgan v Bavin, claim £4, balance due on purchase of a horse. Mr Nalder appeared tor plaintiff ; defendant did not appear. Judgment was given for plaintiff, with costs and solicitor’s fee, also tho costs of tho plaintiff, who hud come from tho Hoad of the Bay.
