1 PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION. 1 AUCKLAND, May 4. A Mr Hargis, a wine and spiritjjmerchant, about ten days ago left Auckland, ostensibly to go on a visit to Rotorua, It has since been discovered that defalcations, amounting to several thousand pounds, exist, an Australian firm being let In heavily. It is supposed that Hargis has gone to Adelaide, hoping to seoure a passage in tho Orient steamer Cuzoo. A warrant for his apprehension has been issued, and cable message sent advising tho police authorities. It has since been ascertained that Hargis left Sydney on board the steamer Cuzoo, which was to call at Adelaide to-day. Hays and Co, of Sydney, entrusted Hargis with the sale of £IOOO worth of goods on commission. Hargis has sold them, and made off with the proceeds.

WELLINGTON, May 4. The Government have received, through the Agent General, a copy of an English and Colonial national song, entitled, “ Hands All Round,” by the Poet Laureate (Alfred Tennyson), sot to music, with a request from the Royal Colonial Institute that the wish of the Poet Laureate may be carried ont, and the song publicly tuog in tho colony on the Queen’s Birthday. DUNEDIN, May 4 Statistics published by tho “ Daily Times” show that the Public’ Works Department spent on contracts during 1881-2 in Otago £19,151, exclusive of payments on account oi the Otago Central; in Southland, £29,705 ;in Canterbury, £62,047. It is proposed to form a company to build a large hotel at tho Water of Leith falls, and to lay out seventy acres as pleasure grounds. The B Batlery have made 726, or 19 points behind the Wellington Artillery. INVERCARGILL, May 4, A ten-roomed house at Greenhills, owned and occupied by Mr 8. Sullivan, has been burned down. It was insured for £2OO in the Northern office. The origin of the fire is believed to be accidental.
