FIRE IN WELLINGTON.
[press association telegram, 1 WELLINGTON, April 30. A fire broke out at 10.30 last night on the premises known as Ohew a buildings. The fire originated in T. Lwan’s auction mart, which was destroyed The flame* spread to the adjoining promises, one occupied by McEu'ffi, provision merchant; the other recently'’occupied by a boarding housekeeper named McNamara. Both these places were gutted. The fire had a firm hold when first discovered, and it was with the greatest difficulty that it was suppressed. A crow of thirty men with an engine wore sent ashore from H.M.S. Miranda, and rendered excellent service in extinguishing the flames at one time. These seamen were heartily cheered by the crowd for their plucky efforts to get the fire under. Chow, it is understood, is insured, but as he lives out of town, the amount is not known. Dwan’a stock is insured in the Now Zealand office for £4OO, and in the United for £2OO. MoEugh’s stock was uninsured. May 1, The insurances on the fire of Saturday night are—Ohew’a building, £2700 in the South British, who are reinsured as follows : —Northern, £350 ; Colonial, £IOOO ; Scottish Imperial, £IOOO ; the latter is reinsured with the United for £260: Tho Colonial and Union have £3OO each on Dwan’s stock.
