Both Trickett and Hanlan are in firstrate form, and are out practising twice daily for their approaching contest. Hanlan is using a boat which he brought from America. The weather is very favorable for the training of Trickett and Hanlan for their contest on the Ist prox. Not much interest has thus far been taken in the approaching race by the public generally. The English BudgetIn the House of Commons this afternoon, Mr Gladstone introduced his annual financial statement. He stated that the revenue was moving sluggishly, and that the income from duties on alcoholics was decreasing, while the savings of workmen showed a corresponding increase. The surplus at the end of the financial year 1880-81 was £352,000. The revenue for the ensuing year is estimated at £85,000,000, and the expenditure at £84,500,000. In view of the surplus thus shown, it is proposed to relievo the extent of the present local taxation and j abolish annual carriage licenses now | levied in Great Britain.
