Some consternation was oaused yesterday when it was ascertained that a case of smallpox bad broken out in the heart of the city. A young woman of twenty-one years, namsd Southern, who had been employed as barmaid at the Imperial Hotel, Adelaide, and who recently arrived here on a visit to his brother-in-law, residing in Swanston street, had been unwell some days, but only yesterday morning she developed signs of smallpox. The patient, with her mother, was immediately removed to the quarantine station premises, and isolated. The inmate was vaccinated, and every precaution taken to prevent communication. The girl states that the doctor who was in attendance at the quarantine in Adelaide was staying at the same hotel.

Some difficulty has arisen over the appointment of Assistant Clerkship to tho Assembly. Mr Jenkins, who had been promoted to tho office was not considered sufficiently competent to advise the Speaker, who is anxious for the appointment of an experienced person in parliamentary procedure. Daring the raoe in tho Age Plate on Saturday, Beoundus fell and brought down Royal Mail, ridden by the well known jockey St. Alban, who was most severely injured. Mr Berry was well reoeived on Monday night, when he spoke on the advantages of Protection. Sir John Robertson was present, also several members of the Assembly.
