[reuter’s telegrams.] LONDON, April 19. Terrible Colliery ExplosionA disastrous explosion has occurred in the Tudoo Colliery, near Durham. A largo number of miners were at work at the time of the explosion, and so far as is at present known thirty-five have met their death. TreasonThe police have effected the capture at Cork of ten persons on a charge of treason. The arrests were made on the strength of evidence to the authorities by an informer who was previously an accomplice of the prisoners. NEW ZEALAND. [PBB PBEBB ASSOCIATION."! AUCKLAND, April 20. Art ExhibitionThe second annual exhibition of the Auckland Society of Arts was opened to-day, with 500 exhibits. It is the most successful jet held. The Late Wreck. The body brought from Kaipara has been identified by several friends as that of Oapt. McKenzie, of the Rona. The body previous’/ found and buried as Oapt. McKenzie’s is supposed to have been that of ttc mate Smith. NAPIER, April 20. Local Option. At the polling on the local option question in the North Ward yesterday, out of a possible 268 votes only 36 went to the poll. There was a majority against an increase of licenses of 31. Equal indifference is being shown to-day in the polling for the Middle Ward. WELLINGTON, April 20. West Coast RailwayThe directors of the West Coast Railway, North Island, have agreed to commence work forthwith, and the engineer has been instructed to let out contracts for the work on that portion of the line partially constructed by the Government. Brutal AssaultAt Qrsytown yesterday, James William Ellis was committed tor trial for a criminal and brutal assault on a young girl named O’Connor, NELBON, April 20. EireA flro occurred at Hope on Sunday morning, when a four-roomed house, occupied by a shoemaker named Muohari, was destroyed. The house was insured in the Colonial for £IOO and the stock and furniture in the Norwich Union for £2OO. Two of the children of Macbari were sick ani were removed with some difficulty. DUNEDIN, April 20. LibelThe criminal libel case against Mr Hitchcock, at the instance of Mr Quin, master of the benevolent Institution, is now on. The defence challenged twelve jurors. The prosecution denied the truth of the charges made in the libellous letter. The defence merely entered a plea of “ Not guilty.”
