KOWAI PASS J.O, ANNUAL MEETING,
Thursday, April 13,

Smith, W, Minchin, T. 8., Uptont J, M. Cochrane, Duncan Matheson, T. W. Bruce, T, H. Anson, and Matthew Weir, Esq. Starter, G. Rutherford; clerk of the course, A, Trip ; clerk of the scales, H. Williamson; hon. treasurer, J. Cunningham ; handioapper, E. Griffith ; secretary, B. J. Shanks.
The very pleasant little country meeting held under the auspices of the Kowai Pass Jockey Club took place on Thursday, at the picturesquely situated course at Springfield. A more beautiful day could not bo wished for, and consequently the attendance was much larger than usually frequents country meetings. Mr Le Sueur bad his pari-mutuel on the ground, but speculators were shy of investing, only about £9O was, therefore, passed through the machine. Games of all kinds were permitted, and sweeps were indulged in without any interruption on the part of the police. The Springfield brass band was in attendance, and played during the intervals. Although the fields were rather small, the racing on the whole was very good, and some exciting contests resulted. The ball was set roll ng with the Hurdle Race, in which the most uumerons field of the day started. Trovatore was dished up a pretty warm favorite, although Levant and the Dunedin horse, Isaac, had many admirers. Mr Olayfield’a Albion had accepted for this event, but, unfortunately, the letter containing the acceptance had never come to hand, and the stewards therefore, although the horse was on the ground, had no other alternative than to deter him from starting. The three first hones took their jumps in good form, particularly poor old Mousetrap, who appeared as fresh and frisky as a two year-old, and ran very well for about a mile. Trovatore, however, proved too much for his opponents, and won hard held. Mr Markey’s double win in the Hack Hurdle Race and Maiden Plate, with the help of Cigarette and Mountain Deer respectively, was hailed with rounds of applause. A protest was lodged against Cigarette, however, on the ground of his having won an advertised race prior to the meeting. The stewards held over their decision for the present. Mr O'Brien then came in also for a double. In addition to the race above won by Trovatore, his well bred colt Tasman proved the saying “ that blood will tell,” and carried top weight to the front in the Springfield Handicap, thus appropriating with his two useful horses the two principal events of the meeting. Mr Q. Rutherford also had hia full share of the pickings by his horse Magic, too, winning a double event —the Publicans’ Oup and District Race. The order of this last event was changed in the programme by running the Ladies’ Purse off first, the latter thus coming between the Publicans’ and District races—presumably to give Mr Rutherford’s horse Magic breathing time between the two events. Curious proceedings frequently occur at country meetings. This is one of them. The Ladies' Purse was the best race of the day, and resulted in a dead heat. The Consolation also was an exciting event, and, like the former, also resulted in a dead beat. This was a terrific boil over. Any odds were obtainable against Tommy and Lady Ellen, and the totalis ator had about twenty on Webb’s mare as against two each on the others. Although the race was given as a dead heat, a very large majority were of opinion that Lady won. The officers of the club got through their work very creditably, and are deserving of great praise for the trouble taken to make this meeting a really enjoyable and successful gathering. Kosciusko and Isaac baulked, and were never afterwards in it. Levant was now again brought to the front, and passed the stand a clear length in front of Mousetrap, Trovatore close up. Levant continued to show the way over the next obstacle, followed by Mousetrap. Want of condition, however, now told, and the old grey had to succumb to Trovatore, who quickly ran up and challenged the mare. The two raced together down the straight, Trovatore winning very easily by half a length. The Hack Hurdle Race of 10 sovs was won by Mr Markey’s Cigarettf, beating two others.

same time going up and collaring Levant, Lady Ellen some lengths off third. Pippin had slightly the best of it round the turn, and on coming into the straight a slashing contest ensued between the tiro to the winning post, resulting in a dead heat, Lady Ellen four lengths off third. The owners divided the stakes.
