Since his arrival in London Sir H. Parkes, Premier of New South Wales, has been hospitably received and feted by the British Ministry and other notable persons. His engagements include banquets for nearly every day of the present month. CAIRO, April 13. Short WorkThe Circassian officers of the Egyptian army who were recently arrested on the charge of conspiracy against Arabi Pasha will be tried for the offence by court martial. AUSTRALIAN. [REUTER’S TELEGRAMS.] MELBOURNE, April 14. A Failure. Mr Warren, produce merchant, Geelong, has failed. His books show a deficiency of over £28,000. SYDNEY, April 14. Our Cable Rates. A deputation, consisting of Messrs Watt, Murray, Allsop and Hays, waited on the Postmaster-General to-day to urge the desirability of adopting the reduced scale for cable messages, which is now in force in New Zealand, for telegrams from Australia to New Zealand. The Hon. Henry Bolton returned a satisfactory reply, and stated that he would endeavor to accede to the request of the deputation.

DissatisfiedSergeant Kidds, whose services have been dispensed with by the Chief Commissioner of Police, intends petitioning Parliament. CrimeThe evidence is finished in the case of manslaughter on the Oxford race course. Judge Gillies summed up this morning. The Prohibition Clause. At the Police Court John Maxwell was charged with unlawfully supplying drink to John Waymouth, junior., in violation of a magistrate’s order anyone supplying Waymouth with liquor for twelve months. The defendant’s solicitor pleaded that the Act did not include localities beyond those mentioned, and the offence had been committed between Hellensville and Dargaville. The magistrate reserved judgment. A Fine Art Thief A picture intended for the Exhibition by a well known local artist of the Society of Arts Exhibition has been stolon and cannot be found.

Great indignation is expressed here at the accounts published in Northern and Southern papers of the alleged widospred and dangerous sickness here. A short time since there were a few cases of low fever, but the tfiloiul returns show the deaths to have been less than usual. The vital statistics show Napier to be the healthiest town in New Zealand. Mr W. Oolenso offers £2O to start a fund to prosecute the authors of the accounts published, if it is possible to find them. WELLINGTON, April 1.4. Local Option VotingThe local option poll in Opuni district gives a majority in favor of increasing publicans’, wine, accommodation, and bottle licenses. DUNEDIN, April 14. The Fayre. The old Englishe fancy fayre, which has now been opened in the Garrison Dali, Dunedin, since Monday, is such a success that it will be kept open throughout the whole of next week.
