Bt. Albans Wbslkyan Church—The Rev. William Motley, late of Auckland, will preach his iniatory sermon in this Church tomorrow morning. The Rev. James Duller will conduct the evening service.

I H.M.B MxbandA.— To-morrow 18 an open day to the publio on board H.M 8. Miranda. The owner* of the steam launch Lyttelton advoitise cheap trip* from port to the vessel. Kaiapoi Pabish Mbbtihs. —At the annual Easter meeting of parishioner* last evening in the schoolroom there was a limited attendance of twenty. The Kev. D. O. Hampton presided. The accounts, showing a comparatively small deficit of about £3O, were read by the minister’s churchwarden, Mr W. W. S'« > and passed. The rev. chiairman intimated that he had tendered his resignation, believing that the work for which he had come into the parish to achieve had been accomplished, namely, the fusion ot parties and the promotion of peace. He referred to the various evidences of progress that had been made during hi* ministration, and hoped for his successor, whoever he might be, a more pleasant time of it. Mr E. Bobins was nominated minister’s warden, Mr O. E. Dudley re-elected parishioners warden, and Messrs Whitefoord, Neeve, Harper, Bounded, Perrin, and D. O’Callaghan vestry, men. Votes of thanks to the retiring officers, ohiir, Sunday school teachers, and Church Work Society wore passed. It was stated the society contemplated the making of a new abac cloth. The proceedings, somewhat lengthy and tedious, terminated at 9.30 p.m. Avoir Boad Boabd Opficb.— The four gentlemen constituting the Avon Boad Board are divided equally as to the location to be selected for their new office. Two sites nave been offered, one at the corner of Kelly s road, and the other near Buxton’s corner, Shirley. It is stated that the question will most probably be referred to the ratepayers.
Thbatbe Royal,—“ Patience,” now that its run draws to a close, seems to have grown in attraction. Last night there was a crowded house in every part, and the opera went splendidly, every point being taken. To-night it will be played for the last time, and on Monday “H.M.S. Pinafore 1 ’ will produced with a grand oast, Miss Maggie Moore making her first eppoaranco this season as Buttercup. Lady Gordon and suite will be present this evening on the occasion of the last representation of “Patience.” Catholic Bazaar. —This baziar reopened yesterday morning at eleven o’clock. Till about throe in the afternoon the attendance was good, but subsequently increased so as to densely pick tho hall and render it extremely difficult to walk about. A brisk trade was driven by all the fair vendors, and there seems every prospect of the pecuniary results of the bazaar being satisfactory, the receipts of the day being £l7O. It will be continued to-day, finally closing at ton o’clock in the evening. Local Option.—Yesterday, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m , a poll was taken before Mr G. L. Lee, Returning Officer, in St. John’s schoolroom, in view of the proposal that the number of tho various licenses in Christchurch South Licensing District may respectively be increased. The decision was in the affirmative in every instance, votes being recorded as follows Votes in favor of permission for an increase in tho number of publicans’ licenses, 76; against, 36 ; majority for, 40 ; New Zi aland wine licenses —for, 72; against, 31 ; majority, 41; accommodation licenses—for, 66; against, 31 ; majority, 35 ; botlle licenses for, 55 ; against, 39 ; majority, 16. The number of persons on the roll is 648; of these 123 voted. There were seven informal votes submitted. Ashbueton Libeaey Commutes. A meeting of this committee was held on Thursday evening last, when it was resolved “ That the new building be erected forthwith on the old site.” It was resolved “ That the new building about to be erected ehonld not exceed a cost of £350, and that the sum of £IOO bb remitted to Mr Mudie, of London, for the first instalment of books.” The president kindly promised to interview the owners of Mount Somers quarries with referei oo to the purchase of building stone. A deputation was appointed to wait upon the Borough and County Councils to solicit a grant in aid of the library building fund. The meeting then adjourned. Suddbn Dbath at Kaiapoi.—Early on Friday morning, before one o’clock, Mr J ohn Bennington, a market gardener and fisherman, died suddenly in bed at his own residence, Hilton street. Tho deceased, who bad reached the advanced age of seventy-one, and had been well and hearty till shortly before his death, is supposed to have died through a sudden stoppage of the heort’s action. Ho was well known throughout the northern district, and was a former resident in Lyttelton, where he lived for many years after arriving in Canterbury with one of the first four ships. An inquest will be held today before 0. Whitefoord, Esq., coroner.
Bbbaoh of thb Licensing Act.—There being reason to suspect that a person named Henry Muller, living in a shanty on the North road near the Waipara bridge, had been telling liquor without a license, a warrant wae issued under section 186 of the new Licensing Act, empowering the police to search the premises. Yesterday Sergeant Watt and Constable Johnston made a search of Muller’s premises and discovered two hhds of beer, thirteen bottles brandy, two bottles whisky, eight bottles porter, nine bottles limejuice, and two bottles of cloves. It is intended to summon Muller to appear at the Magistrate’s Court, Ambsrley, on Thursday next, when the case will bo gone into, Thb Mayohai Bam,—Quite a novel incident took place in connection with the Mayor’s Ball on Thursday evening. His Worship the Mayor of Christchurch with that thoughtfulness and geniality which has so distinguished him since hia accession to office, impressed into the service as many gentlemen as could be wiled from their devotion to the mazy dance to assist him in giving a welcome to the various mayors and ex-mayore, who in response to his invitation were present at the ball. Their Worships the Mayors of Dunedin, Wellington, Oamaru, Lyttelton, and Sydenham were present, as also several ex mayors of Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin. His Worship proposed the health of the visiting mayors, extending to them a hearty welcome to Christchurch. The mayors responded, and the health of his Worship and Mrs Ruddenklau were also proposed and responded to. The healths of the councillors of Christchurch were proposed, and mention was made of the assistance rendered to his Worship, particularly by Ors. Thomson, Hulbert, Bishop, &c, in making the ball a success. Ancient Obdbb op Fobestbbs. —The quarterly meeting of the Canterbury United District, A.0.F., was held at the Foresters’ Hall, Christchurch, last evening at seven o’clock. Bro. Bedford, D. 0.8.; Bro. Maohon, D.5.0.R.; Bro. H. Crooks, D.T.; Bro. Tnomas Capes, D.S.; Bro. Vogel, DB. Delegates—Bros. Williams and Watts, P.C.R.’s., Court Star of Canterbury, 2309, Christchurch ; Bro. Luce, P. 8., Court Thistle of the Forest, 6494, Sydenham; Bro. McClelland, Court Pride of Courtenay, 6031, Courtenay ; Bro. Mummery, P.O.R. , Court Papanui, 6585, Papanui; Bro. Thompson, P.D.O.E, Court Queen of the Isles, 2703, Lyttelton; Bro, Brooke, P.G.8., Court Woodford, 6583, Kaiapoi. The following Courts were unrepresented by delegates, viz. :—Courts Springfield, 6033; Star of Ashburton, 6034 ; Belle of the Isle, 6030 ; Pride of Bichmond, 6584. The secretary reported that the order was progressing generally, and that the funds of the district amount to £1387 11s Id; the courts’ funds to £6029 17s Id, and the widows and orphans fund to £1197 6s 2d, making a total of £8614 14) 4d, which is satisfactory. The correspondence for the quarter, which was lengthy, having been read, it was resolved, in reply to the Registrar General’s circular, that the district is not prepared to recommend any person as public auditor for the friendly societies. Besolved, that the district officers visit all courts in the district, if necessary, within the next quarter, and report at the next meeting. The scale of entrance fees as proposed to bo adopted by Court 6494, Sydenham, was approved by the district. A committee was appointed to confer with other friendly societies, to petition Government to remove the obstructions at present existing in passing goods through the Customs. The sum of £2OO was authorised to be placed in the Post Office Savings Bank. A donation was paid to the lifeboat fund by Court Courtenay. It was resolved that the district officers be a committee to arrange for a banquet during the Exhibition season, as it is anticipated ttiere will be a large number of visitors (members of the Order) arriving here shortly. It has been notified that about 250 will come from Wellington. Several matters connected wrh the working of the branches were discussed and settled, altogether there was an unusual amount of business disposed of. Several accounts were passed for payment, and £4O to be sent to tl e High Court for district goods, and smaller amounts for orders on behalf of Courts. The next meeting will be held at Kaiapoi. The meeting was closed by the D. 0.8. at 10 30 p.m.
Boyal Austbalian OiEctrs. —The programme at this place of amusement last evening was a repetition of that ot Thursday with the exception that afresh afterpiece was substituted. The various items were well received. The drolleries of the clown* were evidently to the taste of the audience, the chief of whom, Max Einkle, met with every demonstration of favor.
Loweb Hbathcotb School. —It has been decided, pending repairs to the building, not to re open the school until Monday, the 24th inst. Oheistchurch Deainagb Boaed.—o the twenty applicants for the post of engineer for the pumping station, a number have been selected to stand the test of a competitive examination. Cahteebtjey Amateub Athletic Club. —The adjourned half-yearly general meeting of this club was convened for last evening in the Commercial Hotel. The chair was occupied by Mr J. E. Parker, vice-president. Thirteen gentlemen were present, including the bon. sec., Mr F. W. Hunt. Owing to some delay it was found impracticable to present a report and abstract of the state _of accounts for the past year, and the meeting was accordingly re-adjourned to Thursday, as advertised in another column.
