Wheat, shipping, is decidedly firm, at 6s 7d ; New Zealand feeding oats has advanced to Bs lOd to 4s 4d ; milling sorts, to 4s Id to 4s 3d. The market is very firm. Shipping. Sailed this evening—The Union Company’s s.s. Te Anan, for the Bluff. SYDNEY April 12. Fatal AccidentA school girl was run over by a tram car in Elizabeth street, and killed. Lost Ship. The NativesThere is now stated to be a great difference of opinion amongst the Waikato natives as to the arrangement of the Native meeting, which is likely to be but sparsely attended. A Bolt. Jas. Conway was arrested at Oxford on a charge of horse stealing at Hawke’s Bay. He escaped from the custody of Detective Doolan, near Cambridge and got away. PATE A, April 12. Steamer Ashore. The steamer Patea has gone ashore at the entrance to the river near the north cliff. She is expected to be easily got off. Appliances for getting her off will be sent hero. She was in charge of Captain Edwards and owned by the Patea Steam Shipping Company. The vessel is insured. WANGANUI, April 12, Launch of a Pinnace. The Naval Brigade pinnace was successfully launched at half-past four o’clock this afternoon. She was christened the Baumi by a little daughter of Captain Abbots. The wharf and reclaimed land was crowded with spectators. Upon launching a crow of twenty Navals was put on board of her, together with the drum and fife band of the corps, and Captain Abbots having invited the officers of the other volunteer corps and the Press representatives on board, the twenty oars were put into requisition, and the Baumi proceeded a mile and a-half on the river and back, the time occupied being about an hour. WELLINGTON, April 12.
The Local Option Voting. The Local Option poll for the Porirna licensing district has resulted in favor of an increase of all descriptions of licenses, except bottle licenses. Very few votes wore recorded, and in no case did the majority exceed two. Thompson’s Show. The Zulu Panorama is doing a splendid business here. Slander Action. At the Supreme Court the jury found a verdict for the defendant in the case of Petheriok v Ambrose, an action brought for the recovery of £IOOO for alleged slander. DUNEDIN, April 12. All Eight AgainThe jockey Arthur Smith, who was rendered insensible at the Mosgiel Races on Saturday, has recovered. Satisfactory. The Mosgiel Woollen Factory Company have declared an interim, dividend of 10 per cent. Crime. The ease against Waldermann, for attempted arson at Queenston, is concluded. This is a case in which the circumstance* are that in a cottage ho spread tar on the floor, piled up brushwood, and scattered matches, &c , and left a lighted candle to burn down to the inflammable material. The jury, who were out about two hours, brought in a verdict of ‘‘Guilty." Several legal points were reserved for the Court of Appeal affecting the validity of the insurance, and judgment was deferred; Land Sale. It is announced that Mr James Shand has bought the famous Edendale estate in Southland from the New Zealand and Australian Land Company. The price has not transpired.
