CHRIST OHUROH. Wednesday, April 12. [Before B. Beetham, Esq., E.M.J Druknbnnebs. —For first offences two men were each fined ss. Larcenies.— Mary A. Saunders, a girl aged eleven years, and small of her age, was charged with stealing 2s from a till in a butcher’s shop in Colombo street on April 11th. She appeared unable to plead, and was dealt with by the Magistrate privately.— Timothy Su’Hvan alias Hanley was brought up on remand from the Sth instant, charged with stealing about 15s from a till in the Railway Hotel on the morning of Good Friday. T. I. Ingram, the licensee, stated that the prisoner and two other men obtained admission to his bar. Witness had occasion to leave the room, and on his return saw prisoner withdrawing his hand from tbo till. The men then went away. Witness examined the till, and found from 15s to 20s in silver had been taken out. Prisoner, after an absence of half an hour, returned, when witness accused him of robbing the till, and finally gave him in charge. In answer to prisoner, and to the Bench, witness said he did not make any effort to seize or interfere with prisoner when he saw the latter withdrawing his hand"'from the till. There being no other evidence forthcoming, the prisoner was discharged. rape.— A. W. Simpson, charged with an offence of this nature, was, on the application of Mr Loughrey, his counsel, remanded till April 18th. Bail nos allowed, £3OO in his own recognizance aud two sureties each in £2OO.

Violent Assault, —Frank Williams was charged with assaulting, with intent to do grevioua bodily harm, Thomas Brunsden on April 11th. Thomas Brunsden, a laborer, living in Lincoln road, deposed that prisoner, whom he had known for some years, interfered, at the house of witness, in a dispute which the latter had with his wife. As a result, there were threa separate fights between the men, in which both were considerably punished, and finally prisoner got witness down, and slashed him about the arms with a knife. Witness exhibited some w unds received in the fray. They appeaio! similar to deep scratches. In answer to prisoner witness said that while fighting a glass door was broken, but the marks on his arm ware not made by the glass. They were made ten minutes or more afterwards. David Q-emmat stated that ho was present at two of the “sec to’s.” Prisoner struck the first blow, but was “ aggravated ” to do so by Brunsden. Witness did not see any knife, though he heard Brunsden call out that prisoner had drawn one. Sergeant Wilson, who arrested prisoner, deposed to finding a small penkni.e in the room in which prisoner was sleeping. Witness examined the scene of the alleged cutting. There was a good deal of blcoi on'the ground, and there was a pane of glass lately broken in a door about three yards distant. There was no broken glass about the blood. Dr. Symos deposed that he examined Brunsdta it about throe o’clooVJhis morning. On bis loft forearm he found three parallel , wounds, apparently made by some sharp instrument. They might have been done by the knifo produced, but were, more pro* bably, caused by glass. There wore, besides, a cut as if from a knife and a contused wound, both on the head. The Magistrate said that with the exception of the alleged use of the knife the parties appeared equally blameable. As there was a doubt shout a knife prisoner would get the benefit of that doubt. He was then discharged. .. Oitil Cash.— ln the case heard on Apnl sth of Elmsley and Curlett v Dudaon, claim £lB for wrongful detention of a spring cart, judgment wai now given for deftndant, with costs. Mr Joyce, for the plaintiff*, obtained leave to appeal.
