BOARD OF CONSERVATORS.
This Board held ita usual monthly meeting yesterday at 2 p.m. Present Messrs F. Jones lin the chair), J. L. Wilson, H. Atkinson, R. W. England and Wm, Boag. An apology was read from Mr W. White, jun., on the score of ill-health. The overseer’s reports on the state of the river were road and received, A report of the works committee, with reference to the proposed groin at Chaney’s Corner was read, and its further consideration deferred till next week. Mr Wilson’s motion on the same subject was also deferred till next meeting, with the consent of the Board. In the meantime, the Avon Road Board to be written to to ascertain if it would be prepared to share the cost of any work that might be undertaken to protect the banks of the river at this point. A report of the works committee on the subject of planting during the ensuing season was then road, and, in connection therewith, a letter was read from Messrs Clarkson Brothers (lessees of site of proposed operations), offering to allow the Board to shift a fence, so as to render it available to pr-t-ot the planting, on payment to them of 10s per chain.
It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Wilson, seconded by Mr Boag—“ That Messrs Clarkson Brothers be written to, proposing that they should shift the fence to a line required by the Board, cn condition of their being allowed the full value of the fence at the expiration of their lease.” It was also agreed that, should they decline this offer, the Board will take the piece of land between the present fence and the river
for the required purpose, a* P er condition ol The works committee report was adopted. Several accounts, amounting’ to £275 a* »a, were submitted and passed for payment, Mr R. W, England moved, Mr " • Wilson seconded, and it was resolved— ah® ll the rates to be made and levied by the several local bodies within the Waimakariri district for the year ending 31st December, 1882, shall be as follows, yi®-, on ® penny in the £ on the general district, and an additional penny in the £ in the special districts.” The Board then took into consideration what steps should be taken to provide for debentures to the value of £SOOO, shortly falling duo, and it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Wilson, seconded by Mr Boag—“ That tenders be invited for the sum of £SOOO, on the security of the Board’s debentures ; the term to be twenty years ; the rate of interest to be left at the option of persons tendering, or fixed at 6 per cent, by the Board, as may be decided by the finance committee ; £3OOO to be available on the Bth May, £IOOO in September, and £IOOO in October, 1882 ; tenders to be received not later than May 9th next ensuing.” A letter was read from Mr Ellis, clerk to the Bicoarton Road Board, enclosing statement showing tho amount of Waimakariri rates levied and collected by that district for the past year, and pointing out that the amount now outstanding was only eleven shillings, due by certain township purchasers he could not find.
It was resolved—“ That Mr Ellis’ letter be acknowledged, and that the Board express its sense of the highly satisfactory manner in which the rates were collected by him." This concluded the business.
