CANTERBURY BOWING CLUB r. OTAGO BOWING CLUB. _ The third annual race between representative fonts of the Canterbury and Otago Bowing Clubs took place on the Estuary last evening. _ As previously announced, the Otago men arrived in town last Thursday, and immediately took up their quarters at Sumner, close to the scene of the contest. The Canterbury crew, however, kept to practicing on the Avon, where they had been doing regular work for some considerable time past, Mr F. Pavitt occasionally soling as coach. The raea last night was rowed over a two-and-half mile course, marked out by Mr Day, and though a fairly straight one, it would be as well in future to choose the course in a direction where the shallow water can be avoided. Mr Pavitt acted as starter, and Mr J. 8. Monck did the duties of judge. It wa* arranged to row the rtes just at high tide, and a little before five o’clock tbs two crews paddled slowly up to the starting flag,, the Canterbury men doing so with a steady swinging stroke, whilst the 01 ago mou did not appear in snob good form as could b» desired. Both crews were exactly evenly weighted, the total of each four facing 44 it 71b, and there was also very little difference in the weights of the coxswains. Appended is the result of the race, and the names and. weights of the crews :

Canterbury R.C.—-J. O. Jones, 10st 51b. bow; J. W. Davies, lOsfc 131 b, No. 2; E. M. Boulton, list. No, 3 ; L. M. Oliivier, 12st 31b, stroke ;J. Laurie, sst 81b, cox. X Otago E C.—W. 8. Baberta, lOst 61b, bow ; H. A. Le Cren, lOst 12& No. 2 ; W. H. Fowler, 12st, No. 3; W7Q. Aspiaall, list 31b, stroke; GL Spooner, fiat, cor 2 The boats wore sent away to a splendid start, the crews catching tho water exactly at the same instant. The Canterbury men, who started vrith a very effective stroke of 41 to the minute, soon began to assume a lead, and notwithstanding tho call of Aspinall to his crew to keep steady Otago began to splash and get somewhat irregular. After going about fifty yards they commenced to settle down well to their work, pulling about 38 to tho minute. After half a mile had been covered Canterbury, who were rowing in good form and well together, hod a lead of a clear length, and at ths end of the first mile this advantage was still further increased to fully two lengths. Responding to the call of their stroke Otago made a game effort to get on even terms with the leading boat, but here again they became somewhat unsteady, whilst Canterbury still maintained and steadily increased the advantage they now held, and settled down to a long swinging stroke of from 38 to 39. On coming into the straight the Otago boat was seen to ba several lengths in the roar. a. d all hope of their overhauling their opponents seemed to be at an end. Several good spurts were mado fay the visitors, but to no purpose, as the Canterbury men evidently had the rase well in hand, and with very little alteration in their pass or variation in their stroke they finally passed the winning post several lengths in advance of the Otago crew, and were awarded b well deserved victory. The result of the race was a great surprise, as it vas anticipated on all sides that the contest would be a very closely contested one at any rate, and immediately before the start the Otago crew were pretty generally looked upon as the favorites. The first match, it will bo remembered, was won by Otago on the Estuary, the second by Canterbury on the Otago waters, and the result last evening givee the local men two out of the three matches, lu the evening the crews met at the Commercial Hotel, where a capital spread wae provided by host Warner. Mr P. Pavitt presided, and, after the usual loyal toasts had been disposed of, the health of the visiting crew was drunk with musical honors. Various other toasts were proposed and duly responded to during the evening, and on the company separating the Otago men were driven back to Sumner, where they have taken up their quarters till after the holidays.
