ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting was held Monday evening. Present—The Mayor, and Or«. J. Orr, G. Parkin, J. Ivean, W. Boberts, A. Harrison, George St. Hill and R. Friodlander. The overdraft at the Bonk was (stated to be £B9O 17s Bd. The amount of receipts since previoua meeting was £7l 8j 3i. Or. Hugo Fried lander wrote resigning his seat as a member of the Council, it being bis intention to presently take a trip to Europe. The clerk was instructed to take steps to have the vacancy filled. The Rev. Edmund P. Coffey, M.A., wrote ashing permission to remove the Catholic Church aoroca Burnett street footpath, with a view to facilitating building operations for the new church. Permission was granted. The engineers reported intar alia, that the contractor progressed with the water-race designed to supply the western quarter of the town. It was decided to take legal proceedings against any parties infringing the by-law touching sections overgrown with tussocks. The Mayor will communicate with Mr B. G. Wright, M.H.R., in regard to a railway-crossing which the authorities had declined to open in Havelock street. Dcided to sell the immigration cottages by auction. A rate of Is in the £ was struck for the ensuing municipal year. Accounts £175 6s lOd were passed for payment.
