EXHIBITION PROCESSION.

A meeting of tho delogates of members of > the Friendly Societies and trades in connection with the Exhibition procession on the opening day, wan held in the City Council Chamber last evening. The room woe flllod ; hie Worship tho Mayor occupied the chair. M. f cmbert was preoent. A letter was read ftcm the secretary ox the City Guards Band, stating that the captain had given an order to the band to play in connection with th® volunteer parade on the occasion, and they "consequently could not act for the Friendly Societies. Mi- Hamilton also wrote, stating that as the Artillery Band had to accompany tho guard of honor to his Excellency the Governor, it could not take part xn the Friendly Societies procession. . , Mr 'B. Button wrote, stating that the charge for the Cavalry Band world be £lO, the band to be eighteen performers. Mr Woodford proposed that ‘the Cavalry Band be engaged at the charge asked. Tke Mayor wished to remark before thisreaolution was put that Colonel Paoke hadj .promised to do his best to supply the process -eion with two or three bands. Mr B. J. Leahy stated that he had ascertained that the Lyttelton Brace Band would moat probably join tho procession. Mr Woodford thereupon withdrew hie motion. . .

The United Carriers’ Association wrote elating that they would bo prepared to join tho procession with four vehicles drawn by eighteen horses in all. It was resolved that the carriers be permitted to take part in tho procession. Similar communioations were read from the various friendly societies and trades that would join the procession. Mr Buxton attended on behalf of the ■I.O. G.T., American Constitution, who would attend tho procession to tlso number of 300. The Secretary stated that the Foresters • would require 500 tickets. It was elated that 200 members of tho Hibernians would attend. Messrs Joubert and'Twopeny wrote stating that tho number of officers of friendly societies admitted near the dais would depend on the space available, also asking the number of officers of tho different orders requiring admission, also adding that the various marshals would be held responsible for the number of tickets sold.

Mr Willsted would like to know what provision would be made in case of any society requiring more tickets than were applied for. Mr Joubert replied that each marshal could have a book of 100 extra tickets.

Tho Mayor stated that as regarded the number of complimentary tickets to be issued it would depend on tho-space available. Mr Joubert stated that he reckoned about eighteen public bodies would each require four complimentary tickets, which would he issued. He had said that space for 200 officers was available, "but he had reckoned without including the cantata performers Still, ho could find space for at least 100 To each particular order or trade four complimentary tickets -would bo issued, not to each- lodge. That is four to Foresters, four to Druids, and tho same to each trade. It was-resolved on the -motion of Mr Watte, seconded by Mr Nathan—“"That Mr Joubort’s explanation is satisfactory.” A delegate from the tailors considered the trades should take precedence in the procession.

Another delegate thought the Friendly Societies ought to bo to the fore. Mr Coomber proposed that the resolution passed at a previous meeting, as regarded the balloting for position in-the procession, bo rescinded.

After a desultory discussion, the motion was put and lost. The balloting for order of procession resulted as follows : 1. Plasterers 2. Bricklayers 3. Hibernians 4. Butchers 5. Carpenters and Joiners 6. Druids 7. Tailors 8. Rons of Temperance 9. Oddfellows 10. Orangemen 11. .Laborers’ Union 12. Stonemasons 13. Carriers 14. Saddlers 15. .Ironworkers 16. Good Templars (English) 17. Maoris 18. Foresters 19. Good Templars (American) 20. Fire Brigades. Mr Joubert stated that in the event of H.M.B. Miranda arriving in time for the opening ceremony, he would like the meeting to agree as to the position any of the men from the ship should take in the procession. It was resolved—“ That they should choose their own position.” It was further resolved—"Thatthe various Borough Councils be asked to take part in the procession and ceremonial. It was also agreed that the position of any future applicants for taking part in the procession should be decided according to application. Mr W. B. Hobbs proposed, and it was agreed that the Marshal be empowered to have detailed programmes of |the procession given to the deputy marshals. The Mayor remarked that he believed the procession would be the finest sight yet seen in Christchurch, and he hoped all would do the best to preserve good order.

Mr Joubert wished to thank the artisans of Christchurch for the great expedition shown in the erection of the building. [Applause,] A vote of thanks to the Mayor terminated the proceedings.
