KAIAPOI ANNUAL REGATTA.

Commodore —J. O. Porter, Esq. Judge—W. Eckoraley, Eaq. Starter —G. F. Day, Beq. Secretary and treasurer—O. E. Dudley, Beq. Committee—Messrs W. Pattman, W. Burnip, O. Smith, A. T. Clark, H- J. Day, O. J. Champion, M. Haider, W. Eraser, J. Hirst and M. C. Moran. This annual event came off yesterday (St. Patrick’s Day) on the Waimakariri. The weather was all that could be wished for, a bright sky and warm sun, with just enough wind for the sailing race. This was the best contested event of the day, the Ariel and Fairy sailing a dead heat for first place, the Kaugh a-Ballegh a bad third. In the senior fours a protest was entered by the Canterbury crew against the Lyttelton men, and after hearing the evidence of the Canterbury, Cure and Lyttelton crows the committee resolved that the Lyttelton crews be disqualified, and the second prize be awarded to the Canterbury crew. They also disqualified the four men who pulled in the Heathoote from polling again in any event during the day. The race was won easily by the Cure crew, the Lyttelton second, and in consequence of the foul the Canterbury nowhere. In the double sculls the Cure Club won easily. The trial fours was also a very hollow affair, being won by the Lyttelton men somewhat easily. In the senior fours three boats showed up, and as was expected the race was won by above length by the Cure men, the Canterbury crew a capital second. The Lyttelton boat was scratched, as her crew were disqualified. The senior double sculls was won by the Lyttelton crew, Canterbury a bad third, and the Cure crew nowhere. In the Junior Fours the Canterbury crew won a very good race by about throe lengths. In the Single Sculls the Lyttelton man was the favorite, and justified his backers by winning somewhat easily, the Canterbury Club second and the Cure Club third. The Artillery band performed during the day in a way that delighted everybody. There was not such a large attendance as on some former occasions, only about a thousand persons, as no doubt the counter attractions at other places kept many away who would otherwise have been there. Possibly Lent might have had something to do with this. The booth holders and hotel keepers did not, therefore, do as well as they expected. The arrangements were very good, and the various officials—particularly the hon. secretary and starter, upon whom devolved the most of the work—must be complimented on the way the events were got off. The following are the events : Sailing Eace, open to all comers; about 6 miles. First priz j, -C5; second do, .61. Entrance, 10s. Mr C. E. Dudley’s schooner Ariel —Colors red, white and bine t Mr W. Hill’s cutter Fairy—Colors red and white t Mr Veal’s Faugh-a-Ballagh—Color red ... 3 The Lotus and Norval were also entered for this race, but did not put in an appearance at the time of starting. The race was the best contested of the day, the Ariel and Fairy sailing a dead heat for first place, and the Faugh-a-Ballagh being a rather bad third. The boats all started well together, the Ariel to windward, and the Fairy and Faugh-a-bahagh in the order named. At no time were the two first boat* mote than thirty yards apart. This event was started pretty punctually to the time set down. The boats were— Il'yan* to the north bank, Cam in the centre position, and Heathcote to the south ride. At the word to go the three were rowed away at a fast pace, and they kept company till Careen's Flat was reached. Here the Cam crew, pulling a grand stroke, forged their boat ahead. For some unexplained reason the Lyttelton Club's boat Heathcote was rowed across the stem of the Cam, which it hardly cleared, and snt into the rudder of the lilysus, thereby throwing the latter boat clean out of its course, and settling for ever the chances of either of the boats to reach the Cam. After this mishap the Heathcote went on its way, and by dint of good pulling came nearly giving the Cam crew all their work to win the race, which they did by four lengths. The Illytns boat was hopelessly behind, and they lodged a protest against the Heathcote crew taking second money, which, after hearing the evidence, was allowed. Trial Pours ; two miles up the stream. Open to all members of clubs who have not pulled in the senior fours. First prise, £10; second do. £2. Entrance, £1 la.

The lilysus men made a game spurt for the finish, and only lost by a length. Senior Pairs, open to all comers. 1£ miles up stream. F.rst prize, £6; second do, £2, Entrance, 15a. Cure C.B.C. —Q, Wright, bow ; J. Winterbourne, stroke... ... ... ... ... 1 Iris, O.K.G —J. O. Jones, bow; L. M. Ollivier, stroke 2 The Unknown, L.8.C., was also entered, but scratched in consequence of her crew being disqualified, according to the resolution of the committee. This was a capital race throughout; and at one time it was quite upon the cards that the Iris would come in first. The reuse was one of the fastest of the day, and great excitement took place as they were rowing up the last half mile, the Cure only winning by a short length. Senior Double Sculls (in stump outriggers), open to all comers. 2 miles. First prise, £S; second do, £2. Entrance, 15s. Firefly, L.B.C. —J. Taylor, bow ; W. Taylor, stroke I Kea, O.R.C. —E. M. O' The Kea made a show of gaining the foremost place, but the Firefly proved too much for them, as the result showed. The Weka, unfortunately, was never up in the race. The Lyttelton Club boat won with five or six lengths in hand. Junior Fours, open to all members of clubs (ander 21 years) ; li miles up stream. Firet prize, £6 ; second do, £2. Entrance, 15s. Wright, stroke 2 The Canterbury Club’s crew went away to a splendid start, and showed the advantage of a thorough training in the way in which they pulled through the race, winning by four lengths. The Camsiders bad plenty of muscle, but seemed to want more practice together. Single Sculls, in stamp outriggers, with coxswains ; 1 mile up stream. First prise, £8 ; second do, £l. Entrance, 7s fid. Firefly—W. Taylor I Kea—J. Hay ... ... ... ... ... 2 Weka —J.
