First Day, Thursday, March 16. NAPIER, March 16. The first day’s races of the Jockey Club meeting to-day was a great success. About 3000 people were present. The weather was splendid and the racing grand. Maiden Plate of 60aova., one mile and a half. Mr Allan McLean’s ch f Louie. 3yra, by Anteroa —Tres Douce (Derritt) 1 Captain Russell's br g Eincraig, 3yrs (Wattie) 2 Mr Broutbton’a b g Ruabine, aged (Honor) 3 Tanner’s Love Not, Q. Mclntosh’s Harafce, Mr Douglass’ Panic also ran. The Envy filly was scratched, being reserved for the big event. Louie was favorite at 2 to 1, Won very easily. Time, 2miu 58sec. Corinthian Cup of 40 sovs ; welter weights for age; two miles. Mr Ellis’ g g Lonehand, aged ... (Lunn) 1 Mr Tatbam’s Romeo, aged ... ... ... 2 No other starter. Lonehand had it all his own way, Romeo pulling up lame. Napier Handicap of 500 sovs ; one and three quarter miles. Mr McLean’s oh f Louie, by Anteroa —Tres Deuce, 3 yra, 6atßlb (Brown) 1 Mr P. Butler’s cb m Luna, aged, 7st 51b (Butter) 2 Mr P. Betting even on Lady Emma, 2 to 1 Mischief, 3 to 4to 1 others. Louie not mentioned. This was a magnificent race, result ing in the most complete boil over ever seen in Hawke’s Bay. Mischief cut out the running, but soon fell back, and the whole field raced round in a cluster until coming to the straight. It was there anyone’s race, but Louie shot to the front and won by two lengths. Lady Emma was called upon, but finished fifth, and Libeller last. The totalisator showed £575, and only four or five shares on the winner. One bookmaker, just before the race, offered £IOO to an orange against Louie, but no one took it up. One bet of £IOO to £1 was, however, booked. Time, very fast, 3min 9joc. Louie, the winner of the Handicap, was bred by the late Mr Mallook, got by Anteros from Tres Deuce (sister to Calumny and Gossip), by Traduoer from Gitana by Sir Hercules— Gipsy Queen by II Borbiero— Gipsy. Nursery Plate, of 100 sovs; for 2-year-olds; 5 furlongs. Mr Mnnn’s b f Rangipo, by Pacific—Aconite (Robinson) 1 Mr Butler’s b f Amazon ... (Derritt) 2 Mr Jones’s b g Yankee (Jones) 3 Five others ran. Betting—2 to X against Amazon, 5 to 1 Rangipo. Won easily. Time, Imin. 60aec. Railway Stakes Handicap, of 125 sovs; three-quarter mile. Mr Martin’s b m Mischief, by Albany— Malice, 4 yrs, 9st (Robinson) 1 Sir H. Robinson’s b m Lady Emma, 4 yrs, Bst 81b (Calleen) 2 Hon. W. Robinson’s Casaivelanua—Envy filly, 3 yrs, 7st (Smith) 3 Soukar and Don also ran. Betting—2 to I Lady Emma and 3 to 1 Mischief. This was a capital race, and was won by a length. Time, 1 min. ISsecs. The following weights have been declared tonight for the Tradesmen’s Handicap :—Virginia Water, 9st ; Mischief, Bst 91b; Danpbin, Bst 71b ; Lady Emma, Bst 51b ; Libeller, 7at 111 b; I.una, 7st 51b; Prim, 7at; Louie, 7st; Envy filly. 6st 121 b ; Soukar, 6st 91b ; Romeo, 6st 9-b; My Dream, 6st 7ib ; Mavis, 6st 71bs; Dan, 6st 51bs ; Eincraig, 6at. Second Day. Produce Stakes ; one mile. Eight started. Laird led, but was collared by Rewi at the back of the course. At the turn Eincraig raced up and won by a length, with Laird second and Rewi a bad third. Hubdlb Race ; one and a half miles. Three started. Te Whetu led at the straight, when Clarence came up but failed to catch him. Lonehand was third. There was a smaller attendance than yesterday. OAMARU JOOEEY CLUB RACES. OAMARU, March 16. The above autumn roots were held to-day, and were very successful, both as regards the number of entries and the capital contests. The following are the results : MAIDEN PLATE. R?dcHffe ... ... ... ... 1 Boughleen Dhoun 2 Whiteback 3 Bedcliffa won a well-contested race by a lengtn, the throe placed being the only ones in it out of a field of ten. OAMARU J.C. HANDICAP. Tasman... ... ... ... ... 1 Legerdemain 2 Adamant ... ... ... ... 3 Rocket and Chancellor also ran, Rocket led off, and Chancellor was left in the rear about ten lengths. Adamant shortly after took the lead, but on the opposite side of the course Legerdemain went up and passed Adamant, and looked all over a winner, but Tasman closed on her on entering the straight, and coming up the rise had her beaten, and won by a length. Adamant was third, about two lengths away, Chancellor and Rocket a number of lengths off. SELLING RACE, Supplejack 1 Bongleen Dhoun 2 Belle 3 LOUDON HANDICAP. Wildboy 1 Mokarakara 2 Little John ... ... ... ... 3 This was a boil over. Coldstream was the favorite, but never had a show in it from the start to the finish. The Handicap Trot was won by Zulu, with Charlie second. The Hack Race was won by Blue Peter ; and the Benevolent Scurry was won by Larry. Second Day. The weather is glorious for the races, and the attendance is good. Hurdles. Rocket 1 Mokarakana... 2 Milo 3 Six ran. Time—4min 7sec.
