A house belonging to a miner named Ellis, near Cromwell, on tho Northern goldfields, was burned down to-day and a child was burned to death in the flames. A CollisionAt Port Chalmers to-day the Union Company’s steamer Waitaki ran into the tug Koputai, cutting her down to the wafer’s edge. The Waitaki was slightly damaged, but was able to proceed'on her usual voyage to Timaru in the evening. The Koputai, which was built in 1876 in Scotland for tho Otago Towing" Company, is of 158 tons register. She has been slung and floated between two lighters. An inquiry will bo held. The Easter Encampment. The Volunteer effleors have definitely decided to-night to hold an Easter encampment near Dunedin. Tents, wood, and water will be found. Each company provide their own commissariat. There is every prospect of a largo number of representatives from country companies, including tho Southland Hussars. A Good Dividend. He will be entertained ot a dinner by his friend*. University Item. The Otago University students will hold a meeting to protest against Sir G. M. O’Rorke’s resolution, carried at Auckland, to grant degrees without requiring the customary keeping ot terms.
