Te Aaan, from South, arrived at 12.40 p m. to-day, and the Hawea at 7 a.m. The German Admiralty is taking steps to effect the easy transformation of the transatlantic steamers sailing under German flags into cruisers, and as a preliminary step, has ordered a great number of revolving guns with the view of preventing the fleet being approached by hostile gunboats. An exchange says :—”Some British shipowners have begun to man their vessels with negro seamen exclusively, the officars alone being white men. They take them at the same wages as ordinary English or foreign seamen. Those who have tried the experiment state that they find colored men as good sailors as Europeans, and that they are more docile and leas inclined to run away than our own men.’’ . A new lighthouse, in which the electric light is to be u s ed, has lately been completed at Marseilles. The cost of the light is seven times less than the cost of that which it will replace. The new lighthouse will be one of the finest on the French coasts. The light, which will be equal to 3500 gas jets, will be vuiblo at a distance of twenty-seven miles. The circumstance of the barque Wigtonshire having left Lyttelton for London twelve months prior to the date she arrived hero would not appear to be anything specially remarkable, seeing that it is not uncommon nowadays for the round trip home and back to be made in something under eight months. The coincidence of the arrival here of the vessel upon the J4th March of the present year, corresponding exactly with the time of her departure in 1881, is perhaps a little strange, bat it should be stated that the Wigtonshire, during the intervening twelve months, visited London, Glasgow, Brisbane, and Newcastle, and came thence to Lyttelton.
