The fire originated by a spark from the chimney falling on to a large coating of decayed leaves lying on the roof. The fire was first discovered by Mrs Atwood, who was alone with the children in the house. She tried to run upstairs to save £36 in cash, which was in the drawers, but was driven back by the flames, and was only able to save her children and get out of the building. Mr Atwood being totally uninsured, loses everything, and not only all his furniture and effects, but also a lot of belting, piping (for threshing machines), and other gear. He fortunately succeeded in saving an entire horse from the stable while the house was in flames.
