The dinne r given to Mr John Hislop, Secretary for Education, on the eve of his departure for the home country, was attended by eighty gentlemen, Mr Macandrew, M.H.R., presiding The guest of the evening consented to have bis portrait taken in England for the purpose of being placed in the Otago University, alongside those of the early founders of the province. INVERCARGILL, March 9. Fire. A large fire occurred at Gore at 9 30 this morning, when Watson’s Hotel and Haxton and Beattie’s flexible harrow factory were destroyed. The insurances are :—Watson’s Hotel Standard. £930. Haxton and Beattie's factory—Transatlio, £IG3 ; Victoria, £SOO. Builder’s risk on additions to Watson’s —New Zealand, £IOO. The Volunteer BoardThe Volunteer officers have drawn the attention of the Government to the nonrepresentation of Otago and Southland at the Volunteer Board.
