LICENSING BENCH ELECTION.
COUKTI-KAT. The polling for the election of five members for the Courtenay District Licensing Committee took place on Monday, March 6th instant, and resulted in the return of Messrs J. Gough, T. Anson, H. J Mathias, W. McLennan, and H. C. Froro. “even candidates were nominated, and the following are the number of votes polled : J. Gough ... ... ... 60 T. H. Anson 56 H. J. Mathias 55 W. H. O. Frere ... ... 47 J. W. Sawle 44 E. G. D. Toaswill ... 34 A countryman upon coming to see the sights was taken by a town friend to a theatre. When the lights were down and the play hod commenced he was offered an opera-glass. Examining it as closely as the darkness of the place would permit, he placed it to his mouth and turned it upward. Finding that no liquid was coming out of it, ho handed it back in despair, saying “It’s empty, John; there’* not a single drap in't."
