Gold was struck yesterday by Heran and party on a flat above Woodstock, on the south side of the Hokitika River, on sinking fifty feet. The depth of wash (three to four feet) is estimated to yield five pennyweights to the load. Several shafts are going down, and a good many claims are pegged out. The flat, though immediately in the vicinity of the terrace working close to the river, has been untried. It is of considerable extent, and it is believed a new lead hn been found. There was some excitement in town to-day on the news being received. WELLINGTON, March 8. The s s- Agnes. The Government have received advice that the cable steamer Agnes is at Port Darwin, and will leave for here at the end of this week. She is expected here in about three weeks. BALOLUIHA, March 8, Suicide. Wm. Whyttook, a settler and blacksmith at Puera, committed suicide early this morning. He was discovered at seven o’clock hanging from a beam in his smithy quite dead.
