SENIOK DOUBLE SCULLS RACE. The rowing off of the Senior Double Sculls Eaoe, which, owing to the swamping of two of the boats engaged on the occasion of the Heathcoto regatta, was deoided to be pulled again, took place on Saturday afternoon on the estuary. The attendance of the spec* tators was limited, being almost entirely confined to the crews and a few enthusiastic boating men. The race was a very good one from first to last, as between the Lyttelton and Canterbury crews, the Union never being in the hunt, and the Kaiapol not putting in an appearance. Considerable satisfaction was expressed at the result of the race, and it was very plain tl>at if the aooident had not occurred at the regatta, the Union orew would never hove occupied a prominent position in the race. The following are the details of the event on Saturday: Senior Double Sculls; one mile and a half. Prize, Mr Monson's Cup and .£lO. L.E.C. Ko Name, red; W. Fitzsimmonds (bow), G. Graham (stroke), J. Donovan (cox) - 1 C.K.C. Kea, white; E. M. Boulton (bow), J. Hay (stroke), J. Laurie (cox) ... ... 2 U.B.C. JSikau, blue and white; E. Borland (bow), S. C. Kesteven (stroke), W. Pengelly (cox) 0 Mr Pavitt sent the two away to a capital start, the Canterbury boat being the first to show in front, with Lyttelton close up, and the Union in rear. In this order they went until rounding the point near the fishorman's hut, where the Lyttelton crew spurted and took the lead by about a length, the Union being five lengths in rear. Coming down the reach to home a capital race ensued between the two leaders, the Canterbury crew making game efforts to close the distanoo between their boat and that of the Lyttelton orew. At one time it looked as if their efforts would he successful, but the Lyttelton men would not be denied, and ultimately won a well contested race by about a length and a half, the Union finishing a good bit in rear.
