HTJRT7NUI RACES. Stewards— Messrs G. W. Moßae, W. O. Rutherford, E. Corbetfc, J. MeFarlane, T. Chapman. Judge—Mr J. D. Lanoe. Clerk of the Scales—Mr H. J. Monkhouae. Clerk of the Course—Mr E. J. Miol-.011. Starter—Mr J. Huvse. Eon. Secretary—Mr W. Thomson. This annual fixture, whioh has been held for several ysars in succession, and which owes a deal of its success in the past, if not its origin, to the station masters in the neigh borliood, including the lato Sir Oracrott Wilson, oame off on Friday with highly satiefr.ot.cry results. In fact in order to sen an afternoon's thorough honest racing, under woltrr weights, and each animal put out on its mettle, this seems to be one of the race meetings which comes as near perfection in this respsct as any we can refer to. In every instance exoept the Distriot Hurdle race, there were good fields, and bar one mulled start, in which elavon hud to go and only half went, but which was subsequently rectified by a bit of diplomacy on the part of the starter, who persuaded the riders to ory "No race," and all start fair, the proceedings were carried through without a hitoh. Mr J. D. Lince acted as judge in an efficient manner. Mr T. Chapman took charge of the scaling machino, while Mr Hursc discharged the dutiea of starter, and Mr W. Thomson acted the role of the übiquitous secretary with even more satisfaction than ever previously. Mr Michell, in the glory of red coat and boots, and up on Gray Laddie, a itJ.'pleohaser of renown in this district, presented, in his eapy unobtrusive manner, a model olerk of the course. The weather was perfect sunshine, but for lack of a brerze to fan their wings, the gnats for an hour or two were a perfect torment. As the day wore on, the plague of flies departed, and the ecsne became m • o' to: u„'h enjoyment. The races started punctually. There was an entire absence of the professional bookmakers and totalisator. Liqnid refreshments wore provided by host Norrio, of the Huiunui Hotel, and most of the visitors brought hampers or baskets, which, after the Cup race, were brought into requisition. _ The races commenced at one, upon the arrival of Holder's coach with its four greys from Amberley, and concluded at about half-past six, the visitors having the advantage of "driving home by the light of a moon shiny night," whioh latter, to those who had to return by the Woikari and Weka Pass, indeed formed a fitting conclusion to a most enjoyable outing. The course was in fair going order, having bees damped by the previous day's rain. The sport began at the hurdles, over eix flights, weights over I2«t 7ib, for which Beer Tax.Kjsciusoo, and The Lad, were the favorites out of the seven entries. Hope had many backers, but was not looked on as a certain winner, although he ran very well, and came in a game second to Kosciusco, Beer Tax third, and Cyclops fourth. In the District Hurdlo race there seemed but little choice between Traitor and Nobby. The judge seemed to think it very funny, however, that Nobby, who had baen ordered out to grass for some time, should appear on the course in charge cf one of that gentleman's sons to go for this and the Mile Flat race, when the horse was really expeoted to be in a convalescent hospital. In the Hurdle race he was capitally ridden by Mr F Lance, and although ho did not score at the jumps, he gained time on the flat, and beat Traitor at the last jump, ooming in a winner by two lengths. In the Cup race, out of the eight whioh faced the Btarter, Norman was the favorite, Waikari and Canard both looking very pink. Koieiukas was also sent for it, and with Haideo, both had a tolerable show till the grand rush, when Canard came along with Norman whipped up. In the District B.&CO, three-quarters of » mile, there wore seven entered, for whioh the old horse Montrose was much fancied; but as the result proved he was beatoa by the Lid, which was cleverly ridden by Miles, and Peacock by Mr H. Linco. A protest w»a lodged against The Lad for not being bonajitle the property of a resident in the district from January Ist. It was proved to have been nominated, and accepted in anothor owner's name, he not being a resident in the district, for the North Canterbury races on January 2nd, and the protest wus therefore allowed. At this stage a private race was got off, between Mr Fleming's b g "Windwhistlo and Mr Pitcher's Tim Wh;ffli?r. The latter had much the best of it for half a mile, when Wind whistle was called on and came away as he liked. The riders were light weights. This match caused a fair amount of speculation between two average hacks, and a great deal of amusement. Six were sont for the Waitohi Plate, for whioh Canard, who had a spare spurt left over from the Cup, was freely speculated upon; but it was soon seen to be a bit of string to the Atlantic cable on Maid of Honor's chance, Evans riding her out all the distance, she surprising every one with her speed under list, with Canard second, and Trompator third, Constance was fourth. The District. Mile Race scored a popular win to Nobby, ridden out by Mr F. Lance, Montrose second, and Princess third. Eleven essayod to try conclusions for the Lidies' Parse After fidget ting a bit at the start six got away, leaving the others at or about the post. Haidee took the lead and kept it to the finish, The Lad, Glenooe, and Hope racing for second place. The riders, however, agreed to have a second spin for the money, and the lot were despatched on level terms. When fairly into runnirg Norman led, with Maid of Honor at the girths j but finishing up the Maid passed him in the straight. A Consolation Handicap Raoe pre* duood a field of nine, in whioh Bijou, Haidee, end Constance were spotted, but the raoe fell to the lot of Lady Ellen. It was intended to have he'd a Lidies' Pony Ke.ce as usual, but darkness setting in prevented k.
