[FEB FBESB ABBOCIATIOK.] AUCKLAND, February 25. A Real Want. A Women's Immigration Society has been formed, with Lady O'Eorke as pretident, and an influential committee. The objeot of the society is the introduction of respeotable female servants. Accident - A young man named Ogla, while bollock hunting at Port Albert, was thrown from his horse, which fell on him, There are but faint hopes of his recovery. CrimeWilliam McLean was arrested at the Groat Barrier on a oharge of attempted rape on Elizabeth Whelton while on her way to Flat Bash school, Otahuhu. The Clnb Question. Fublio attention is being called to the peculiar management of some of the working men's olubs, HEW PLYMOUTH, February 26. The Hative Crops. The Parihaka Natives have finished wheat threshing. The crop is good, and the grain is superior to the average. The Political Prisoners. The "Herald " states that the Natives a»e allowed to see Te Whiti and Tohu in prison, and although no conversation of a political nature is permitted, yet when visitors return to their homes imaginary sayings of Te Whiti are repeated, and believed by the people, thus maintaining Te Whiti's influence. Seductions. The Armed Constabulary force is being gradually reduced at the front. About thirty have applied for and received their discharge within the last month. It is understood that there is no intention to recruit the force. NELSON, February 26. Th« Firing. The first shot will be fired at one tomorrow afternoon. The arrangements for catering appear to be excellent, and the weather promises to be fine. Owing to the small number of entries, the prize money will be reduced by about 20 per oent. WELLINGTON, February 25. Reclamation.
The Oity Council has decided, under the advice of its solicitor, to proceed with the Te Aro reclamation, notwithstanding the objections of the marine department. The Ministry. Mr Diok is now the only Minister in Wellington. February 26. Rechabite Meeting. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Central District Independent Order of Keohabites was held here. Delegates were present from Napier, Blenheim, Nelson, Marton, Taranaki, Invercargill and Shag Point. The meeting was held in compliance with the Friendly Societies Aot. The total number of tents was stated to be twenty-three ; the number good on the books was 770, and £350 had been paid as sick allowance during the year. The total amount of the siok fund was £5138, and the contingent and district funds raised the total to £6729. After providing for all liabilities, £792 had been added to the funds. It was decided to hold the next general meeting here in February, 1883. TIMABU, February 26. Atmospheric. A very brilliant meteor passed over tho town early this morning. It was visible fully a quarter of a minute, and made tho night almost as light as day. DUNEDIN, February 26 CarelessnessA shipment of Loch Leven trout ova, 10,000 in number, was received by tho Acclimatisation Society. It turned out to be completely destroyed, owing to inefficient packing. They oame by the Orient steamer to Melbourne, and thence by the Botomahana. A Prosperous Company. The directors of the New Zealand Drug Company will recommend the payment of 10 per cent, per annum as a dividend. The net profit available for distribution, after paying £3604 4s for the half-year ending 31st July, 1881, amounts to £10,078 19s lOd. The dividend will absorb £3877, and the balance will be carried forward. The report states that advice has been reoeived that tho Government will promptly pay £SOO bonus for the production or fifty tons of sulphurio aoid, and adds, " We are also making muriatic aoid largely, and have the plant reedy for making nitric aoid. It is also now the intention of the directors to add another important industry to connect with the acid workt, namely, the manufacture of artificial manures and other chemical' products on a large scale."
