The railway carriages on the Waikato and Faipara line are regularly fumigated by order of the railway authorities as a precaution against the spread of scarlet fever. The Maori King. The City Council and the Mayor have accepted Tawhaio’s invitation to attend the Native meeting. Very Interesting. George Bennett has been committed for trial for the robbery at Cox’s restaurant. The Late FireBranchman Fulljames, of the Auckland fire brigade, was injured at the fire at the Waverley Hotel by a section of plaster falling on his back, and was removed to his bouse. Panter, the landlord of the hotel, was considerably burnt about the head and left forearm while getting out of the window, and is confined to his bed. Ministerial Movements. Messrs Bryce and Whitaker returned to town from Waikato. The Premier, after visiting Cambridge, is going on to Rotorua, to meet Mr Rolleeton. Mr Bryce goes to the Thames next week to investigate some of the Native land purchases. It is not yet certain whether he will go north, or return to Waikato, but ho purposes staying here some time. A Libel Case. Westcn, the bookmaker, has commenced a libel action against the “Observer” for £IOOO damages. Unless settled the case comes on for trial at the April sittings. NAPIER, February 24. The East Coast Land Company. A special meeting of the shareholders of the New Zealand Native Land Company, convened by Mr Dargaville, was held here this evening, and was well attended. Full explanations were entered into, showing that, so far, the company had been carefully managed, and very successful. A vote of thanks to Mr Dargaville, and confidence in the policy of the company was proposed by Mr Beetham, M.H.E., and carried unanimously. WELLINGTON. February 24. The Riflemen. The Wanata, with the rifle competitors, sailed immediately the Rotomahana arrived. Lieutenant Adams, of the Bruce Company, missed his passage by the Wanaka through delay in transhipping. RGlc&ssd* Jim Mace was to-day released from quarantine.
