IMMIGRATION AND EMIGRATION.

[fbom thb oobbbbpowdbnt of the "PBBSS."] WELLINGTON, February 19. A return has just been prepared showing the immigration and emigration of New Z?a. land during the month of January, 1882. From this it appears that 450 persons arrived in the oolony from Great Britain, 647 from the Australian colonies, and 93 from other places ; total, 1190. On the other hand, 72 persons left New Zealand for Great Britain, 355 for the Australian oolonies, and 63 for other places ; total, 690. Thuß the gain to the oolony during the month was 700. The 450 English arrivals included 13 Government nominated immigrants, and the 355 departures for the Australian colonies included 13 Chinese. No Chinese arrived duiing the month. The returns for the calendar year 1881 are also now complete. During that period the arrivals in New Zealand were as follows: From the United Kingdom, 3507; from the Australian oolonies, 5579 ; from other places, 602 ; total, 9688. The departures were : —Fur the United Kingdom, 369 ; for tho Australian Colonies, 6718 ; for other places, 616 ; total, 8033. The net gain to the oolony was 1655 ; of these, however, 658 wure Chinese, leaving a net European gain of 997, of whom 102 were Government nominated immigrants. The total arrivals of Chinese during 1881 were 1029, and the departures 371, the former being nearly double as many as the aggregate of the two previous years, and tho latter being 15 fewer than 1880, while that was 10 fewer than 1879. Comparing the laßt three years, I find that the arrivals were respectively : 2»,95f, 15,152, 9658; total, 48 797. Departures, 6234, 7918, 8033 ; total, 21,1 S 5. Thus there has been a net gain to the colony each year and a total balance.in its favor of 27,612. It is noteworthy, however, that the arrivals have decreased and the departures inoreasnd in each successive year ; but this is chkfly due to tho deoreaee of. Government immigrants, who numbered 20.311 in 1579, 2688 in 1880 and only 102 in 1881,
