Tancred, H. B. Webb, and the Rev. O. Eraser. The business transacted by the chairman sinoe the last meeting of the Board was submitted and approved. A letter was read from Mr J. P Restell, resigning the post he had hold for the past twenty-four years as inspector of schools, assigning reaaon therefore, and acknowledging the courtesy he had always received from the Board. The resignation was acoepted ■without comment.

A letter was read from the Ashburton school oommittee, complaining of the Board having appointed a mistress to the Ashburton school, and urging that a second master should be appointed instead. The chairman stated that schools in a similar position found their second teachor in a mistress, and it was for the Board to say if they would make an exception in this case.

After discussion it was resolved that the regulation must be adhered to. A letter from the High School was next read, in which it was stated that the subjects in which the boys who proposed to compete were most proficient would not count, viz., Latin and French. The hope was expressed that they would be allowed marks in competition for scholarships in all subjects in which they had been instructed. The letter was received.

Mr J. Q. Walker wrote, asking permission to recommence his olasses at the gymnasium.

The request was acceded to. A report from Mr Malcolm, principal of the Normal School, containing certain suggestions respecting his classes for teacher*?, was read and agreed to.

A deputation from the Riohmond school committee, of whom Mr Fleeher was the -spokesman, then interviewed the Board, asking for increased school accommodation and teaching power, seeing that till recently this district: had been part of the East Christchurch educational district, and he hoped the peculiar circumstances of the district would be taken into consideration. The Chairman stated that the wants of the -district should be, as far as possible, attended to.

Mr G. Booth asked if a great number of the ohildren of the distriot did not go to Gloucester street school.

Mr Flesher thought that this would discontinue so soon as competent teachers were appointed. Since the separate district had been proclaimed, the attendance had increased at least sixty per day, and at present eighty children had no desk accommodation.

The Chairman repeated hi* assurance, and the deputation having thanked the Board for its courtesy withdrew. It was agreed that tenders be called for certain additions and alterations to the Lincoln and Sonthbridge sohools, as also for a master's house at Little River. A letter from the Stoke sohool was then read, stating that since the present master's advent the attendance of school children had inoreaied, the accommodation was very inadequate. The average attendance was stated em thirty-seven. It was deoided to make an addition to the sohool house of 22ft by 20ft. An application from residents in Darfield, enclosing a list of householders and children residing in the district, was next read. The -writer asked that Darfield, according to the boundaries he had defined, might be pro's new school district. It was agreed to proclaim a new school district in the locality in accordance with plan enclosed, setting out the boundaries thereof. An application for a new school district at Winslow was deferred, ponding enquiries being made. Applications for sohool bells from Lower Heathoote, Prebbleton, Stoke, and Wainui were next dealt with, and the three first were granted.
