LYTTELTON HARBOR BOARD.
The Board met at Lyttelton yesterday in their offioes, when thero wore present—The Hon. E. Biohardson '(ohairman), Messrs O. W. Turner, P. Cunningham, H. Sawteil, E. G. Wright, J. D. Maopherson, H. All--wright, and the Hon. J. T. Peaoock. The Chairman made the usual statement in regard to the business whioh was to come before the Board.
The resignation of the Board's draughtsman, Mr L. Neville, was read and accepted, but the appointment of a Buocesior was leit -with the harbor improvement committee for consideration and report. A telegram from Mr R. J. S. Harman apologising for his absence was received. A resolution was pa-sod authorising the -necessary repairs to the boat stage and breastwork at the pilot station. The report of the harbor improvement committee was re.:d. The following were the important points dealt with :—"(1) Be completion of Ware and Jones' dock contract, and proposal for Board to take over dock— Your committee, having fully considered the question of taking over the dock on the completion of Messrs Ware and Jones' contraot. recommend the Board to adopt such a course, provided a satisfactory settlement can he arrived at with the contractors. The committee have accordingly instructed tho engineer to make up the contractors' acoounr, in order that it may be laid before the finanoe committee and the Board as soon as possible. {3) Be Pilots' application for increase of salary—Your committee cannot see their way to recommend an inoreaao of salary to the pilots. (6) Re electrio lighting for the inner harbor—After fully considering Messrs Siemen'a letter in reference to electrio lighting the inner harbor, and having obtained the Government's permission for Mr Meddings, the Inspector of Telegraphs, to furnish the Beard with a report upon a modified aystem of lighting by means of Messrs fiiemen's electrio lights, you committee are of opinion that it is feasible that a complete and efficient system of lighting, under Messrs Siemen's patent, can be -obtained for about £SBO a year, and probably at a considerable less oost in first outlay under the Brush Company's system. Mr Medding's report and estimates are on the table, also Mr Joyce's letter in reference to the Brush Com--psray's system." The report was considered clause by olause, and on the first paragraph Mr Maopherson moved that the words " for their consideration and decision" be added to it. This was agreed to and the olauso passed. Mr Wright spoke in favor of an advance to the pilot, and moved that his salary be increased by 25 per cent, per annum. Agreed
to. After some brief discussion of clause 6, it was resolved to defer the consideration of it -until Mr tfedding's report and Mr Joyoe's bad been looked into by the members. With reference to the applications of Messrs <Juff and Graham and Mr Mitchell for a remission of wharf dues on goods sent to the Exhibition for exhibition only, it was agreed to do so if the Board legally oould, but the opinion was strongly expressed that the concession oould not be made, no matter how desirous they might be to meet the wishes of the applicants. Further inquiry would, however, be made on the subject. Moses Barton's request to be permitted to have a little huckster's stall near the waterman's steps was left in abeyance, Mr P. Cunningham next moved the motion standing in bis name, " That the harbor improvement committee, consult with the Lyttelton Borough Council with a view to using the electric light for the town and the harbor." Se apoko of the light as now being an established fact, and a success wherever it was in use, also alluded to the economical side of the question. The motion was carried.
The Board then adjourned to the 28bb instant, at 2.30 p.m., in Christohuroh. when the eleotion of chairman for the next year will take place.
