Clark, Mayor, nominated as one of the licensing commissioners,was disqualified, as receiving a salary from the City Council. Among the city candidates are Joseph Newman, D. H, McKenzie, O. O. McMillan, and Councillors Aickon and Thompson. Local Telegraph Line. A telegraph cable across the harbor was successfully laid by the aid of the Customs launch and the Harbor Board silt punt. The Drink and the Natives. The Bay of Islands natives are indignant at the enforcement of the law against selling spirits to the natives, while the Whangarei Maories get as much drink as they can pay for. The Arson Case. The charge of arson against Joseph Merrick Just was heard and adjourned till Tuesday. Scarlet Fever Spreading. One hundred cases of scarlet fever have broken out at Onehunga. Twelve deaths hare occurred, and fresh cases are daily reported of. WELLINGTON, February 11, Operatic. The Montague Turner Opera Company close a most successful season of eighteen nights this evening. “ Mignon ” and “ The Royal Middy ” were a great success. The troupe leave for Christchurch on Monday. The poll will be tatten on Tuesday week. February 12. Steamer AshoreThe steamer Wakatu is ashore at Patea in a dangerous position. Her propeller is broken, and the vessel is disabled, with a hole in her bottom. She is expected to become a total wreck. It is understood that the vessel and cargo is insured to the extent of £IO,OOO, but in what offices at present is unknown. TIMARU, February 12. A Bailiff Missing'. Edward Wilson, a bailiff, has been miesing from Waimate since the Gffi inst. The police are looking far him. No cause is known for bis absence.
