DRAINAGE BOARD.
Monday, Fbbbuaby 13. The usual sitting of the Drainage Board was held at 2.30 p.m. Present—Messrs. L. Harper (chairman), Yincent, Jones, Manning, Hubbard, Ashwortt, and Dr. Doyle. A letter was read from Mr White apologising for his absence on the ground of ill-health. The Mayor ot Sc. Albans waited on the Board in reference to drainage in the St. Albans district. A deputation of ratepayers residing upon Innas’ road bad waited on the Council to complain that the drain along the road was not sufficient to carry off the water draining from the land in the neighborhood. The complaint further was that the culverts were too small to allow the water coming down to flow away into the main drain on the Papanui road. What was required was to take the drain straight along the road, so as to get rid of the water easily, and avoid the backing up which now existed.
It was resolved to refer the matter to the engineer to report upon. The o igineer’s report, referring to a number of unimportant matters, was read and discussed. It was resolved—" That the recommendation of the engineer to pay over to the Heathoote Hoad Hoard £BO for the repairs of Buckley’s road be adopted, the £BO to be paid on condition that no further claim be made on the Drainage Board re Buckley's road." Mr Jones said, respecting the question cf laying pipes under the culverts on the New Brighton road, that he would give notice of motion as follows :—“ Tha'i culverts crossing roads which are sufficient for the purpose of the Drainage Board should be kept in repair by the local bodies, but if such culverts are not sufficient to carry the drainage the Board will build a sufficient culvert at their own expense, but the duty of maintaining such culverts in repair shall become a liability of the local bodies; that the Drainage Board should keep in order the water courses throughout their whole length; the local bodies to maintain all culverts and bridges ; the Board also to clean out the water courses under culverts and bridges.” Mr Manning moved —“ That the Board lay the pipes which they have promised to tupply.”
Mr Jones seconded the motion. Mr Hubbard objected to the motion being put at the present meeting. The motion was put and lost.
A request for compensation to the amount of £7 10s, for damage to a horse falling through into a gully at the corner of the Ferry and Ollivier’s roads, was refused, [Lsft sitting.]
