The Licensing CommitteeTwelve gentlemen were nominated for Dunedin Central licensing committee to-day, including all those nominated for Dunedin Sonth yesterday. For Linden, a suburban district, only three were nominated. The Governor will therefore elect two. INVEECAEGILL, February 10. Short of Means. At ts-day’s meeting of the Southland County Council it was decided to call the attention of the Government to the want of funds experienced by the Council since the withdrawal of the 20 per cent, of the land fund and the reduction of the subsidy. It was further decided to invite the co-operation of other Councils in urging upon the Government the claims of the counties. Fire. On Tuesday last a threshing mill and elevator, belonging to Mr Jenkins, were entirely destroyed by fire at Mr Sutton’s farm. Mr Jenkins was insured for .£250. A Suspicious Combination. The publicans and Good Templars will probably agree to the names of five gentlemen to be elected for the four licensing districts comprising the borough of Invercargill. The Weather. The weather during the past few days has been very stormy, and it is feared the heavy showers and high winds will have seriously damaged the crops. There seems no prospect of the weather clearing up. [feoii thb own ooeekspondent of thb “ PEKSS.] WELLINGTON, February 10._ Mr Bryoe left for Wanganui, where he will remain a short time, then go on to New Plymouth, and afterwards to Auckland. While in the • North he will probably, as I mentioned recently, have an interview with Tawhao in reference to several of the points in dispute, as was intimated to Tawhaio by the Premier during the late meeting. During the quarter ended December 31st, 1881, the export of wool exhibited a diminution of nearly 10 per cent., as compared with the corresponding quarter of 1880, while the value of the rabbit skins exported showed an increase

of 75 per cent , that increased value being tome £36,000, while that of the diminished wool export was just about a million and a quarter. The export of gold displayed a reduction of 15 per cent., oats 25 per cent., and kauri gum 40 per cent. The wheat export, which was only .£5316 in the last quarter of 1860, rose to .£107,650 in the corresponding period of ISSI.
