A dioptric revolving light, with au electric arc, has b een constructed by Messrs Ckance Bros., of Smothwiuk, near Birmingham, for the South Head lighthouse at Sydney. The lamp has a power of about 12,000 candles in the focus of li<*ht, and the merging beam has a luminous intensity exceeding 12,000,000 candles. The lamp wa» designed by Dr Hopkinson, F.E.S. Its makers claim that this will be the largest and moat powerful light in the world. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. Auckland, February 6. Arrived—Duncraig, Captain Stovin, from London ; Caledonia from Noumea; Bynofrom Savage Island. The City of Sydney sailed from 'Fnaco on January 15th. Arrived at Auckland after an uneventful voyage Passengers—Mrs Shay ter, infant, and nurse, J. Herepath, C. Deprotoniahi, Cortiss, Frear, Messrs C. J. Fairfax, J. A. Fairfax. Miss Fairfax (2), and two in the steerage. There are twenty-five passengers for Sydney, and 260 tons cargo for Auckland, consisting of 608 cases canned goods, 68 packages hops, 35 sacks seed, 40 casks honey, 300 barrels sugar, 85 ca»es paint, 3 flasks quicksilver, 97 packages merchandise, 3 crates live sheep (blood.) For Sydney 1021 packages merchandise. The steamer sails for Sydaay at 3 am. Wellington, February 6. Arrived—Kiwi from Napier and the East Coast. Sailed—Rotorua for Melbourne via South. Penguin for Picton and Nelaon; Rrtorua for Melbourne via South; Tui for Kaikonra and Lyttelton. Dunkdin, February 6. Arrived—Beautiful Star from Westport. Sailed—Beautiful Star for Timaru; Eliza Firth for Greymouth. Bluff, February 6. Sailed—New Zealand Shipping Company's Loch Fleet with full cargo of wool for London. Bluff, February 7. The Te Anau left Williamstown on February Ist, at 1 a.m.; arrived at Hobart on February 2nd, at 11 a.m.; left the same day at 8 p.m., and was off Milford Sound on the 6th, at 2 a.m. The weather throughout the passage waß aplen. did till Tasfc upon sighting land, when it became very thick, with a drizzling rain and rough sea. The Sound could not be entered till 12 noon. Passed through the Sonnd, and left at 3 p.m. Entered George Sonnd at 5 p.m., paßsed through and left at 7 pm., and arrived at the Bluff at noon oa the 7th.
